Increased bed wetting

I’m in my early 30s and normally have one bed wetting incident a year. Within the last three years it increased to monthly and now I’m to the point where I have an accident once a week. I’ve looked for trends and I can’t find one. I finally decided to wear pull ups to bed but I’m a side sleeper and still have leaks. I’ve tried several different brands but always end up with the same result.

I know I need to go to the doctor but in the past I’ve just been told it’s hereditary. I did wet the bed pretty much weekly up until 12 or 13. I’m embarrassed to go to the doctor.

I do wake up in the middle of me peeing and I am able to stop it from being a full void. It’s hard to find stuff online about what you should wear for what you’re going through. It’s either aimed and people who have fetishes or caregivers. I just want to wear the right product so I don’t have to clean my sheets afterwards. I’m also hesitant to take the next step into diapers but maybe that’s where I am at. Any tips would be helpful.

Absolutely see your doctor about this. My situation is different being incontinent after surgery. I wear nighttime depends to bed. The stigma is gone but initially was there. We're all physical beings with biological functions. Of course, losing control left me feeling helpless, but there is always help. In the meantime, I'd rather have a dry bed if I can't be dry myself. Good luck.

Hi sounds like nothing to be embarrassed about. You should have a doctor you can tell this to who lets you be comfortable sharing anything.
We are a very normal ordinary group of people here with many different causes for inconvenience ranging from hereditary to trauma to chronic medical conditions.
A mattress protector bed pad is a start. Keeps the wet off your sheets and mattress.
Some here like quality products You can buy on Amazon have one to wash and one spare as a sidesleeper myself i see that for us, leaks happen. Some will have success with various disposable extra pads or brand of diapers.
Some here buy from Northshore a variety of quality diapers from pull ups to tabbed types they will discuss things very kindly and send samples.
Im a woman, I personally prefer a cheap brand of pull ups from zwalmart called assurance that are lightweight but have a good capacity for liquid and are light weight all around so I don't feel overwhelmed. I expect leaks, I was my leaked on mattress pad pretty much daily and get on with life.

The best diaper that I’ve found for bedwetting is the Northshore MegaMax. I’m also a side sleeper, and it’s the best protection that I’ve ever found. Seeing a doctor about your situation is also very important. I know it’s embarrassing. But doctors get consulted about all kinds of embarrassing problems. Just screw up your courage and go!

Hi Kylbern,

I think we all had that feeling of embarrassment at first, but as May said - there is nothing to be ashamed of. It is certainly a good idea to ask a doctor to see if there is an organic cause, he may also be able to help with some medications.

To answer your question, generally diapers work better than pants and they are often even cheaper. But to be honest - if I had this problem only once a week, I probably wouldn't use them. When this thing started for me, I had PUR encased my mattress and comforter. Under the sheet I have a washable pad. If something goes wrong I still have to wash the sheets and some times the duvet cover but the blanket and mattress stay dry.

I think it is hardly avoidable that it is now and then what goes wrong. I wear diapers at night and even with that I have a wet bed once or twice a month. To be honest - I still haven't gotten used to the diapers - especially in the summertime. If I was lucky enough to have it happen only once a week, I probably would rather re-cover the bed. Unfortunately for me it happens now two or three times every night and so with diapers it’s much easier to turn around and fall back to sleep again.

Seeing the doc about bedwetting is no big deal. They are very matter of fact about it. You need to rule out any underlaying problems. I found out I was diabetic following my appointment with the doc about my bedwetting.

Go to the Doctor, you have nothing - I mean nothing to be embarrassed about. However I would not go to the one who told you it is in your genes.

Your bedwetting issue is almost identical to mine, except for the age. I was also a bedwetter as a kid, until my mid teens.. Then I wet the bed about 1 or 2 times a year, until a few years ago, when it became a monthly thing. When I started wetting the bed 1 to 3 times a month, (Last year..) I went to the doctor.
One doctor referred to another, then another, etc. In the end, I'd seen 4 doctors, had several tests and expensive scans done. In the end, the doctors' best guess is that it's hereditary for me. (My father and uncle were both bedwetters too.)

Now that being said, you SHOULD indeed see a doctor, if only to rule everything else out!!

As far as wearing protection, like you, I also tried wearing pullups first... Which leaked. A lot. After a lot of trial and error, I now wear cloth diapers and plastic pants at night. At this point, I wake up in wet diapers pretty much every morning. I also wear disposable diapers in the daytime, for my ever-increasing daytime incontinence issues.

The important thing is to get checked out by the doc, find the right products that work for you, and get on with life. Don't let bedwetting stop you from enjoying life!!

My bedwetting and daytime incontinence is caused by my diabetic related nerve damage and I have learned to live with it. I saw the doctor and got refered to the urology team at our local hospital. Then I was refered to the continence nurse for help in managing my incontinence. My advice is get checked out and then if it is found you have no underlaying problems, get on with your life. I don't let it stop me doing anything I want and lead a full and happy life.
