Is this normal?

So something weird has been happening since I started wearing protective underwear. It is quite a hassle to change in and out from regular underwear so I just wear protective underwear all the time.

However, something weird has been happening. I am able to have control over my bladder and bowels at home but it seems to go away whenever I go out. I was out on a walk today with my walker and when I got back, I realized I had a bowel movement without knowing.

I would have had an accident anyway because it would take a long time to get back inside and then continue the workout but what’s weird is that I was unaware of it. Even though this is improving my quality of life and I’m able to do more but the original intent would be to use it as a backup.

I guess I would rather be incontinent and participate in more activities than stay inside all day but it’s still odd.

Normal is all relative. If you have other diagnosed medical conditions, this could be normal for those conditions.

It is possible that your body is being triggered by something out of the house, whether environmental or timing or something else. Our bodies learn over time when we go to the bathroom and then can trigger the urge to go when our brains sense similar circumstances.

This is something you would typically discuss with your primary or specialist. The NAFC site has a very extensive list of specialists at https://www.nafc.org/find-a-doctor

Hi rdouga1

I am not sure what reasons you are having incidents but hey at least you were wearing protection. ;)

As long as you have a general understanding of why you are incontinent than it’s okay honestly from my perspective. Just I would maybe ask a doctor or nurse about your nerve sensations on your rear end as I found it slightly peculiar you didn’t feel anything or maybe that is a sign of another issue. Not sure on your age etc. But like you said you would have had an accident either way as it was a long time to walk back with your walker. And I agree with you as it’s way better to accept and embrace wearing protection and going out and still doing things rather than just staying at home to avoid any accidents. As I don’t believe staying at home is really living ones life to the fullest if the only reason one is staying home is to avoid an accident. Just my humble opinion. Lol 😂

For myself I wear protection now basically 24/7 just so I can continue to life my life. I have relapse /remitting MS 39 years old and the fact I can walk on my own currently I am very thankful as in Dec 2016 I couldn’t. So whatever I need protection so what and honestly who cares.

It could be that the walking and prolonged standing and nerve pressure causes some saddle numbness. This can range from complete loss of sensation to your whole waste area or numbness to the groin and/or anus area. And it might not be noticed. Next time you go out, stop several times along the way to touch and poke around to feel if you are numb in any placed waste down. An enema or good old fashioned bowel movement before the walk will certainly help. And yes, I am still alive and alert. Lol

Likewise Jeffswet.

It’s good to hear from you Steven and I pray that angels are looking out and after you!!

And great points Steven as I learned once again from the great people on this chat.

Can anyone recommend a washable cloth diaper PULL UP style that I can wear overnight with extra booster pads and not need plastic cover ups over everything? Thanks Mike

Kins brand has cloth pull-up style diapers. I think they even have one with a waterproof outer layer.
The trouble that I've found with the "All-in-one" type pants is durability. When my bedwetting got worse to the point of needing diapers, I tried some of these all-in-one products. I found that putting them in the dryer after washing, really shortened the life of the plastic outer layer. But hanging them up to dry took to long, because they were multi-layer thickness. So I ended up with a diaper pant that had a leaky outer layer, so I STILL had to wear plastic pants over them. And then after a while, the elastic in the diaper-pants started to fail, resulting in a stretched out waist band that would not stay up.

In my case, I found that old fashion diapers and diaper pins worked best for me. I can pin them on as snug as I need, and my plastic pants last longer too, by not putting them in the dryer.

Thanks for feedback and suggested use of old fashioned cloth diapers ... which I will try. Mike in Canada
