Bladder Urinary Symptoms post Robotic Prostatectomy

Don’t let the fact that you don’t have a nine inch scar across your abdomen from fooling you into thinking that you didn’t have major surgery. You did! It takes time to heal. Make sure to tell your urologist that you still have a small amount of blood in your urine.

I am 6 weeks post surgery and still have some tightness in lower abdomen.

@Alh63,

It sure DOES!!!

Too early to start worrying about the NEXT one, so will just enjoy these test results for a WHILE!!!

=)

Thank you & +God+bless+!!!

Just a couple of thoughts. Doing Kegels seated gives you more of a sense of muscular feedback. My physio said it was important to do them standing even if you don't sense the muscles tightening as much as when seated. This is particularly important if you experience more leakage standing.

On the issue of recovery 12 weeks is a short timescale. You do read of those who are fully continent by three months but there are many you take much longer. I was very stressed by a lack of improvement by three months. Now at seven months post op I am totally dry at night, only getting up once in the night from a position of leaking during the night, getting a shower at 3.00 am , going to the toilet 3/4 times per night. On good days even when active my total leakage can be 30 to 50 MLS. This contrasts with leakage in the region of 600 MLS. However, there are days like today when the leakage is more severe and for no reason that I can identify. As some have said the journey of recovery is not a straight line. Yes at times it is stressful but keeping active, taking an interest in family and life in general, pushing on with things you enjoy and not allowing incontinence to hold you back all help. For those on this thread you are in the region of 12 post weeks post op, try to be patient,keep positive and improvements will come

Really appreciate everyone here and their experience. It helps so much to know you are not the only one suffering from this ailment.

I had a prostatectomy on October 18th, 2022. My Gleason score was 7. The surgeon said there is still cancer at the margin but instead of removing it he said they will monitor by doing a PSA test every 3 months. Has anyone been in this situation?

Never had this, but it might be a very low grade cancer. As I understand it, radiation would be the next step when there is still some residual cancer. I’d ask more questions of my doctor if I were you.

My Gleason score was also 7(3+4) and I decided to have mine removed via surgery. Depending on your age and overall health was a big part of my decision. I didn’t want to put off until later.

I will ask about it again when I see him on November 23rd. Also, I will probably get a second opinion.
Sorry. I didn’t realize you already had RP on the above post. I think the right decision would be to get a second opinion.

@rruhala,

I had Radical RP and have 0.04 PSA post-op. If goes up at all (next check in 6 weeks), my surgeon suggest and I will have a test to determine where it is and then have radiation.

I initially waited and it doesn't go away, plus, in my case, it was worse than they thought, so I am not waiting anymore. If they determine it is cancer, I want it GONE ASAP!!!

Just my thoughts.

I, too, from what I was told, radiation would be the next step - get the 2nd opinion, but don't wait to long - you don't want it to spread, like mine could be doing!

Praying for you - +God+bless+!!!

Thanks for sharing. My surgeon didn't understand how I could be sore down there. He suggested I speak to my primary care physician because it might be related to back issues.

Does anyone still get occasional blood on your pad? It is becoming less frequent, but I do see pink on the pad and a red plume in the toilet when urinating.

Unable to do them standing because I feel no strength there, can't get a good squeeze. I started PT a few weeks ago. No real improvement, yet.

Do any of you guys have soreness in crotch area when sitting? I still have a hard time putting socks and shoes on. I have to sit off to one side. Not sure if that is part of healing process.

I am with you on both. I am four months out from a salvage radical prostatectomy and sit exactly the way you describe. I am quite uncomfortable when I sit on my taint on a hard surface. I also still experience occasional bloody urine and blood drips. My urology team does not seem concerned. Incidentally, I am still WAY incontinent. I have done physical therapy and religious kegals. It is extremely frustrating. Hang in there.

Yes I was fairly sore in my taint for 3 1/2 months. Still slightly sore if I sit on something hard. Had RP on Aug 11 of this year. Should be healed by now but I think it may be from scar tissue. My surgeon told me I was a challenging patient as I had a very deep and narrow pelvis. Just have seen some improvement in incontinence that last two weeks. I think that for all the PT, kegals and diet restrictions the thing that really helps is time. Those beat up pelvic nerves just need to heal. No improvement on the ED however but if that’s the price I need to pay so be it. Hopefully will continue to improve.
Merry Christmas to you all.

I was doing much better with my incontinence until I got a recent upper respiratory infection. Not sure if the coughing or just basically feeling bad caused it. Hopefully after I get over this I will get back to normal.

Thanks for sharing. I am almost 4 months out from RP. Been doing PT and exercises prescribed by therapist, but virtually no improvement when I am standing and active. Tired of constant changing of pad’s all day long. My hands are so chapped from washing them dozens of times a day.

Mdoshen. I understand that feeling of being fed up wearing pads. I too feel that way, although I am now wearing much lighter pads than at the start of my journey. You might want to consider an external catheter or conveen. I use them from time to time as a respite from the pads and especially if I'm going to be away from home for a lengthy period.

I used external catheters for 2 weeks when I first returned to work. Worked well for me being in healthcare and being on my feet for 12 hour shifts. It takes a little time to get used to. Definitely do at home before using to work or go out in public. I bought a bunch of catheters, leg bags, catheter shorts, and other accessories and my incontinence suddenly got much better. I still have them but hope I never have to use again.
