Radical prostatectomy - bladder control

Hello All,
I am 74 years old and a year ago I had a radical robotics prostoctomy, After a year of kegels and four months of physical therapy I have trouble to control my bladder. I am much better from five six months ago but I still have to wear pad since I have some leaks that I don’t have control of. I appreciate your input and you sharing your experience and your recommendations.
Sincerely
Assad

I'm just over 5wks post op. Found a trick that helps a little. Sit to pee. It improves complete bladder emptying. Thus a little less leaking.

My surgery was Aug 2019. I still have leakage issues so I wear a pad all the time. I will be 72 this month. It looks like pad might be a way of life for me. I'm used to it now. Sounds like you are doing the right thing. Keep it up.

Depends on how much you leak and why. I had modest leaking 2 years after surgery. Decided to have a sling procedure which reduced leaking considerably. I no longer wear pads but still have occasional leaks that evaporate within the hour. By most definitions, I would be considered completely dry

I'm 72 1 year post surgery. Had 1/2 the nerve bundle removed and now I don't use any pads. Have very little leakage and I where dark pants for the rare acaction of a small leak. Keep your with keagles. Some people just take longer to heal and gain better control. Unfortunately some go for years LEAKING then decide for additional surgery, like a sling for limited stressed leaks or ARTIFICIAL SPINKER FOR MORE HEAVEY LEAKAGE.ALSO THR ATE MEDICATION THAT WIl HELP.hang in there

At 72, I am 2 1/4 years post surgery. The surgeon had to take the nerves. The good news is that I am cancer free. The bad news is that I have almost no control. I'm still pretty active and have talked to my doctor(s) about the various options. Since I manage to handle the issue with various products we decided that the risks outweigh the benefits.

So sorry. But I must ask what products are you using? I'm only 6wks post op. Have had minor improvements. But still struggling, and trying to find the right products.

Now after a year I’m using small pads only, much smaller than depends pads. I accidentally found small pads at $store. I use couple of those a day.

AS I'm reading these posts, I see that I am of the age that most of you are. I'm 74. I had my prostatectomy 4 1/2 years ago, and continue to leak. From what I have read, the older one is the greater chance of gaining control becomes more difficult...like everything else age related. Now that I am struggling with heart failure, and had recent back surgery my incontinence seems to be a little worse. I manage with tape on diapers during the day, and pin on cloth diapers at night. It's obviously frustrating, and not what I expected, but I'm getting use to the need for diapers. What is getting me more anxious is a couple of European trips coming up next year. Packing enough diapers will be a challenge as well as not being noticed.

My friend one of the advantages of being old is that we shouldn’t care and accept what comes in our way when we can’t change it. There are times that I get frustrated but then I say it is what it is and try to make the best of the situation. All I know that getting old sucks!!!!

Damp, I would be surprised if European stores didn't offer similar products to what you use here. I would do some internet searching to get an idea just to ease my mind. Hope this doesn't negatively affect your travels.

Dont understand passivity in the face of a solveable problem. Look into a sling or AUS. You dont have to suffer.

Not passive at all. Those options have been offered. The sling was not recommended. The aus comes with its own have had numerous tubes, wires, etc. inserted for a variety of health issues. At some point enough is enough. Not everyone can be treated the same.

Hi All,
I am 58 and about 12 days post-op for radical prostatectomy. Foley catheter was removed a couple days ago. The doctor saved both nerve bundles. I had good continence pre-surgery and have been doing Kegels faithfully.

I am cautiously optimistic that I will eventually get back to good continence. However, now when I stand up from a sitting position I have major leakage and it feels like I have no control at all.

Is this common soon after surgery/catheter removal? I know that it is still early on the journey for me...but just wondering if anyone has any advice for countering this (other than "wait for things to improve").

Thanks!!

I'm 72 and had 1/2 nerve bundle moved.i leaked heavily when getting out of bed or standing up as you describe. It took me 4 to 5 months startsraing an improvement. No 1 year post surgery, I only rarely leak with sneeze. I no longer need pads. Hang in there. You will read here it is very common to leak as you are in the start of recovery.

I am now now 4 1/2 months post robotic prostatectomy, I spent 10 rough days in the hospital, and 11 weeks with a Foley catheter. After the catheter removal I have done Kegels only somewhat sporadically. Since then I have been 100% incontinent with a constant drip-drip-drip and occasional squirt when getting up from a chair or coughing. However just this Thanksgiving day I got something to be really thankful for, what I would deem as 70+% continence with only minimal dripping. I have never heard of it seemingly improving so much virtually over night but I'm not complaining. In fact it has even gotten better, maybe to the 80+% level since then. Plus my stream is better than it has been in the last 6 or 7 years. Pre-surgery I actually joked with my Urologist that the Prostatectomy might "cure" my BPH driven incontinence and to my surprise he said it was possible, looks like he might be right. My next Urologist appointment coming up in a few weeks should be interesting.

I am 55 yrs old 3yrs post radical prostatectomy.I had 2 sling surgeries and still to this day i have to wear a pad and change 3times a day and diaper night ...this has been so depressing as a young man to go thru.my other only last option i believe is the AUS surgery and even that only has a 10 yr shelf life or even soon that may cause complications then to only have to end up removing.wish there was another alternative besides surgery..
