Hello, has anyone had radical prostatectomy with cancer in the bladder neck If so did you recover from incontinence?
I am 65 and 3 months into recovery and I am incontinent. Also I am on my 5th UTI can’t seem to see any improvement. Help

Hello Bobdog, I had the radical prostatectomy in August 2017 and have long history of bladder cancer (22 surgeries in 22 years, 74 doses of chemo). I did not have incontinence before the prostatectomy but I have a severe case of it now. Also, have UTIs about every three months. But I am a coffee lover and that doubles my incontinence problem. Even with just one cup of coffee I am producing more urine. I have considered the Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) but not completely sold on the device yet as the urologist would have to disable it every time I need quarterly cystos or surgeries at least annually.

Hi, thank you for your response, sorry you have to deal with everything. Hopefully what little cancer was left in the bladder will not become a problem? I do not drink coffee only drinking h20 but I worry the incontinence will haunt me. Will be having scope done soon as dr. Does not know why I have constant uti’s.

Bobdog, I had a laser procedure to remove calcium stones in my prostate and bladder neck in January, 2017, and have been incontinent ever since. Basically my internal sphincter (ie. the bladder neck) was compromised during the removal of these stones. In 2011 I had radiation treatment for prostate cancer, which effects the ability of tissue to heal. If the tissue in your bladder neck that is responsible for continence is missing, due to removal of the tissue during surgery, my guess is that you will not fully recover.

As you heal from the surgery your continence is likely to improve somewhat. During the first year after my surgery I had at least 6-7 UTI's. Whenever I get one my leakage increases significantly. I still deal with this problem, just not as much as during that first year.

Drink water by the glass over and over. Avoid all forms of sugar and acidic food. Get probiotis and take them to reset your gut bacteria

Doctors seem to be very good at NOT giving you a PRECISE diagnosis, but my urologist said it was probably related to the necrotic tissue that I have in my urinary tract. The necrotic tissue was caused by having a TURP, then having radiation treatment for prostate cancer. A second TURP basically added insult to injury. The necrotic tissue is prone to holding onto & growing bacteria. Thankfully I have had good results with antibiotics, but it is a near-ending cycle

Thank you for your help. I am finding fine grit like sand every morning when I get up in my depends, is this caused by antibiotics?

@cmulwee I also had really bad infections after a TURP. I now take low dose trimethoprim for months at a time, Phil

Definitely want to have a specialist check you and your kidneys and bladder out. That sounds troublesome for sure. Just saying because I care.
