Neurogenic Bladder

When I had my complete urodynamic study done at 31 I was found to have a neurogenic bladder and from my history probably since birth. While it was important to find out I had wished my teenage years of being a nightly bedwetter and regular daytime struggles as well would have been easier to understand. My urologist told me my bladder reacts like a babies in that my bladder/brain signals don’t work properly and I have no chance of keeping myself dry at night. I spent all those years wearing diapers to bed and multiple pairs of underwear with pads in them to try and contain regular dribbles.surgery was suggested but that it might help. I wasn’t willing to go under the knife for any maybe fixes. Resigned to 24/7 diapers with thick cloth diapers overnight and quality disposables during the day. While sometimes inconvenient during the day the stress relief has been tremendous. Just one of those health conditions to be lived with and adjusted to. I Lao don’t hide from others and plenty of friends and family know I’m incontinent.

@donny4 Interesting. Typically Neurogenic Bladder is caused by severe injury/trauma to the pelvic and lumbar spine region, not something that happens from birth. Were you born with Spina Bifida or any damage to your spine? What surgery was recommended? Neurogenic Bladder is typically permanent. I wonder if you should seek a second opinion.

My doctor said “probably” since birth and Sid unusual without other health/development conditions such as spinal bifida. Cause is not important to me at this point. Diagnosis seems to be most important.

It might not hurt to get a second opinion, because if there’s a different cause, your diagnosis could be different and therefore they there may be different treatment options for you. I forget; do you get Botox? It works the best for those of us with neurogenic bladder.

I have not gotten Botox, and you may be correct that it could help. Yes I know it’s not a curable condition. I’ve got an annual physical next month and will ask my doctor about it.

I am another one that is neurogenic bladder. Mine is due to multiple sclerosis. I have embraced diapers 24/7; years ago and for myself that was a huge stress relief as I didn’t realize how stressed I always was in the question will I make it in time. Lol 😂. Honestly compared to my relapse remitting MS; the fact I have to wear diapers isn’t an issue. I am 42 years old; I sometimes self catheterize however not that often. The residual urine hasn’t become an issue yet thankfully but if I have to catheterized so be it. Just my thoughts…

Cheers

Jason, thank you for sharing your life story with us. On this site we try to help each other by our histories and experiences. I too have a neurogenic bladder. Mine is due to airplane crash requires surgery to my back and multiple other back surgeries do to spinal stenosis. The nerves between my spine and bladder don’t work so I can’t feel my bladder. Like you, I struggled with wearing diapers 24/7 but I’m fine with it now and don’t care who knows. We all have our demons we battle. Take care and many blessings to you. Again, thanks for sharing.

I to have Neurogenic Bladder due to the debridement surgery from fournier's gangrene.
My bladder fills till it's full and i can not feel it then it just empties on it's own and i can not stop it. i know it's going to release about a minute before because my bladder will cramp and then i just relax and let it flow. There is no use trying to stop it. i wear ether Magamax or XP5000diapers and sometimes with boosters depending on i what I am planning for the day.

Hi Garry,

Welcome here sorry to hear your situation granted it sounds like you have accepted it is what it is which granted for some individuals that is the hardest part. It is hard to love oneself with oneselfs imperfection shall to say.

At least if we accept the issue there are at least great products nowadays that we can learn to function relatively normally in society little do they know. But honestly everyone else is too self absorbed they barely even notice anything. ;)

Cheers

Jason
