Traveling, hotels and preparations

Hi all,

How do you prepare when traveling by air and are going to stay in a hotel for an extended period? Do you call the hotel to tell about issues, so that they can put proper mattress protection, do you ask for a bigger trashcan/diaper bin? Do you use disposable mattress protection in addition?

I was going to order diapers sent to the hotel - to avoid filling up my luggage. Anything else people are doing?

While I do not fly, I have read enough tips to give a few. I only ever stay one night when traveling so.

Yes call the hotel. Ask for extra bedding and a mattress protector.

Medical supplies are almost always free to travel with (Call the airline and ask).

Make sure you have more stuff than you think you are going to need.

I shared a collapsible trash can here before. They are cheap and can go right in your bag. (Check amazon)

Yes to the disposable mattress protection. That way if you do have an issue you can change things out and still sleep.

Last, just have fun. No one cares what you have on.

Thanks a lot, I will try my best to😅

I don't ask for any extra accommodations, every hotel I've stayed at in recent memory seems to have some kind of waterproof sheet/barrier. I also typically fly with my wife and kids, so I just pack my extra supplies with them. I'd definitely suggest taking more than you think you need (free carryon for medical supplies might be a thing), and maybe an extra bag for used products. Just a different perspective.

My only other suggestion is to arrive earlier for security at the airport and be prepared to reveal to TSA that you're wearing protection. The last time I flew I had to go into private screening and pull my pants down. It was over in minutes but your only other option is to go through without and put it on after OR hope they don't trigger enhanced screening.

I quit asking about bedding protection as every time I requested they replied they don’t do that. Now I do understand they hold reservations but not necessarily reserving a specific room. I have some light plastic sheets that are about 5’x6’ and I just put it under the sheet when I arrive. I bring plenty of plastic grocery bags to wrap up my wet diapers and having scoped out the hotel and drop those in a communal trash can outside of my room. When I plan on staying a few days at a hotel, when I can, I order diapers to be delivered to my hotel and pick up the package when I check in. I do this when I can because carrying enough diapers is challenging when traveling over 5 days or so. Yes tsa, even with tsa precheck if asked to stand in one of those full body scans always causes more winding and through pat downs. I have not had to go to a security room and drop my pants (yet) but have been asked about my diaper bulge when felt during a search. I’ve just had to reply maybe 3 times that I have a diaper on. That has been the extent of it and never get any negative reaction.

We travel frequently and I highly suggest using the vacuum bags from Amazon for diapers, once the air is vacuumed out they take up very little room. I use those small black trash bags (also Amazon) and then place in the bathrooms trash can. If we stay at a place that doesn't have daily room service then I just throw away the black trash bags in the closest trash can.

A word of caution, if you're traveling outside your home country it can be extremely challenging to find comfortable products that meet your needs.
