Sleeping

I had prostate surgery a month ago and have total urinary incontinence. I am able to manage OK during the day but have a lot of trouble at night having to get up and change every two hours. Has anyone found a good overnight solution?

I had the problem of releasing my bladder at night. Once I went to sleep, I slept soundly for 4 hours. I found Northshore Go Supreme pullups helped and held a lot. They are expensive, but worth it not having to change the sheets each morning.

You can request a sample pack which cost about $10 in shipping.

For a relaxing night I‘d not suggest to rely on Pull-Up style but instead give full tabbed diapers a try. They are much more absorbent and don‘t leak as much as pants for the same price…

I also had to make adjustments to my sleeping habits... First, I had a catheter for 12 days and found it easier to sleep in a recliner instead of a bed. After twelve days the catheter was removed, I decided to try the bed again with just the Assurance underwear you buy at Walmart... For my entire life I have been a "side sleeper" and when I slept in the recliner I noticed that I had to essentially sleep on my back and it not only helped with the incontinence, but also allowed my sinues to remain clear all night long... which I found amazing. For whatever reason I do not leak reclining or sitting... and my PT told me it was because my bladder was relaxed.... but when I get to the edge of the bed or chair, I have to do a mental kegel and hold.... to contol the "spurt" I know that will come... but I can somewhat control that and walk, stiffly and slowly, to the bathroom... I also use a red beer pong solo cup placed strategically before I stand to catch that initial spurt... saves on a lot of absorbent underwear.... but using the cup would be nearly impossible in public... but. .I also found out why several acqaintences over the years wore coverall jump suits... I now own some coveralls that allow you to manipulate all these procedures without being noticed.... I also am retired, don't have to be anywhere at anytime, so I have essentially told family and friends that I will probably withdraw from society for a year..... I hope that is not the case but I am very uncomfortable in public right now... and I will miss my grandson's first basketball game of the season tonight.... he understands... but I will try to make it to a few of his game hopefully after the new year...... good luck....

I am newly incontinent after a prostate surgery. I don't know if this will be a permanent situation or not.

I started out using the Assurance brand Pull-ups because initially after the surgery I was mostly continent. I found that as I pulled therm down and back up, the stitching around the legs which prevents leaking came undone and they would leak.

I went with a better brand adult brief for overnight, and a booster pad. I use the Because brand Booster pad in the briefs which allows urine to absorb in the pad until its capacity, i.e. 2 cups, is exceeded. The urine then flows through to the brief. I have used the Assurance brand brief during the day, also with a booster pad.

I will warn you that when the booster pad is full, and the brief is somewhat full, the brief gets heavy and will start sagging which will cause leaks. I have not found a good method of supporting the briefs when they are partially full. This is a work in progress.

What products are you using to manage your incontinence now? I have found that briefs, and Pull-ups, do not like the horizontal position. Urine follows the path of least resistance, which is frequently along the front of the brief/pullup and out the sides. The products are designed to have your penis aimed down in the brief/pullup. If it involuntarily changes position at night, that will cause issues too.

I hope you are able to find a solution that allows you to get some rest and stay mostly dry.

Hello,

The use of booster pads is mostly not a good idea. It is better to use a product that has the necessary absorption capacity on its own.

Booster pads can make several problems. On the one hand, they ensure that the leak guards of the actual product no longer work properly and that the whole thing can leak out faster. On the other hand, they ensure that the heat can no longer be dissipated so well and the skin heats up. This can lead to skin problems in the long run. The same applies to the resulting thickening of the product, which then, for example, squeezes the thighs.

Especially in the case of severe stress incontinence, it may make more sense to use a condom Urial, because here the skin is less heavily burdened and nothing leaks out - provided that the condom catheter is applied correctly and the right size is used.

This saves you, especially at night, from changing the aid and you sleep better.
