OAB after Rezum Prostate Procedure

Had a Rezum procedure (water vapor injected to shrink prostate) for BPH about four months ago. Successful outcome. Greatly improved flow. Completely empty bladder now. About two months ago I began to develop strong urges and some minor leaking if I didn’t void soon. Never had this problem. I did wear a catheter for about three weeks post procedure. No problem after catheter was removed. Also,I was taking Flomax for three years prior to procedure. I started doing Kegels one month ago. My thoughts:1. The Flomax relaxed the sphincter muscles so much that they are now weak. 2. Having a catheter in for three weeks affected the bladder, bladder neck or surrounding muscles. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Dictates 2nd opinion if youve gotten a first. Howver I have found this forum excellent at sharing their 2nd and 3rd opinions. Not all urologist are created equal. Never heard of the water vap thing

Frank, I am a little jealous. I had the Rezum procedure (they inject steam which is supposed to kill off the part of the prostate that has invaded the urethra) which was the most painful thing
I have ever experienced (and I have had kidney stones). The result of the procedure was no improvement at all. I am happy that you have experienced some improvement. Good luck on trying to solve your current issues.

Sorry Rezum didn’t work out all that well.While it appears Rezum was reasonably successful for me (so far) I also had a lot of recovery problems for about 3 weeks. No pain with procedure, but a lot of prostate swelling after. Couldn’t pee at all, so catheter had to stay in for 3 weeks, as opposed to normally 4 days! Being in so long caused a UTI which brought on its own problems. In all, I wasn’t in the clear until about 6 weeks post procedure. Pee great now, however, maybe too great!

Hello Frank,
I also have OAB and use the Foley on a regular basis to manage it. I have never heard of catheterization causing or increasing OAB. I have the support of my urologist for using the Foley and while talking about its pros and cons this issue has never been mentioned.

Do you have an follow up appointment with your urologist soon?

@frankkawa

I am about 1 year post REZUM procedure. I had general anesthesia, so no pain. No catheter either. My doctor said he only used 2 blasts of steam.

Recovery was fast and it seems to have helped. I have not had any direct side effects. He also said it will continue to improve with time.

Why do some docs do one way like the rezum, while other do thr turp, others green laser and others blue? Make you wonder if what they do is based on what equipment they or the surgery center has to pay off.

Meza, it sounds like you had a great experience. The Rezum is a relatively new procedure. Because there was no general anesthesia used with me, the doctor did the procedure in his office. That is more profitable for him, very painful for me. I am looking to switch doctors. I believe the others procedures require anesthesia.

@stuart

My procedure was also in the doctor's office. I asked for the anesthesia. I also ask for it whenever I have had procedures that sounded especially painful. Here in the Kansas City, Missouri Metro area we have anesthesia doctors that will come to the doctor or dentist office on demand.

Anyway, I have been my own advocate for many years. Speakup for yourself.

God bless you!
