Next steps?

I believe my urinary incontinence problems began as a child. I would wet my pants because I was so focused on doing whatever I was doing that I would wet my pants. I wet the bed until I was in my teens. I did go a long period of time when incontinence wasn't an issue. Even after having my twins, it wasn't that big of a problem. A little leak here and there. About 10 years ago (when I was 48) I had my first sling surgery. It worked for about 2 years. Then I started seeing a urogynecologist because the incontinence was getting worse. I tried several medications - no luck. Eventually, 4 years ago I had the Inter-stim put in. It didn't really work. We replaced it with a newer, better model in December 2021 and still - major incontinence issues. I found a new urologist from the National Association of Continence website and he's ok. He said I have very tight muscles on the left side of my pelvic floor which could be the cause of the incontinence but certainly was the cause of my pelvic pain. So he sent me to see a pelvic floor therapist. I'd seen one before without any result but I thought I'd give this new therapist a try in case they had a different approach. Nope. 8 visits in and the therapist has sent a progress note to my urologist that further diagnostics need to be done. So what is he going to do? What else can be done? I go through 3-4 Depends every day and get up to pee at night 4-5 times and rarely make it to the bathroom without going so there goes another Depends. When I stand up from my desk I just gush - it's not a leak - so I head to the bathroom with my new Depends to change. Anyone have any advice on what to do next?

I’m sorry this is such a struggle for you. I’m pretty much incontinent all the time. You might consider better quality products for better coverage. I also had Botox to the bladder for several years and then it quit working. :(

I agree - a premium diaper holds more so you won’t need to get up as much - sorry for down grading depends brands - I tried them at 1st but I think they are only good for dribbling issues- if you go full blown empty your bladder they are not good as far as I’m concerned

Hello @BkLegalEagle,

Welcome to the NAFC. You're story is not far off from others on this forum - as it seems like childhood bladder issues can continue onto adulthood.

I'm surprised the inter-stim did not work; the trial helped myself and gave myself around a 50-60% improvement in symptoms.

From the sounds of your symptoms - you sound like men on here who have suffered from incontinence post prostate surgery. Alot of guys will have control sitting down; as it restricts the urethra and then when standing up lose control. You mentioned urogynrcologist so I can only assume you are a woman.

Myself on the other hand; suffer from what are considered spasms - in which the frequent urge causes my bladder (I believe my urologist called it a detruser muscle) to spasm and contract which creates the constant "urge" to go; and finally in some cases on really bad day causes a rythym of leakage.

Anyway, in regaurds to protection - I wouldn't beat yourself up - because you are not alone. I would find a support network to help you through this. God, I wish I had one. There are more comfortable protection out there that aren't the cheap, noisy Depend products. I'd recommend a medical supply store in your area if you have one for your dignity in mind.

The Truth of the matter is - is that bladder problems suck. Because when you have them, and you were humiliated and shamed for it as a child - you feel stuck back in a body you don't want to be in.

Praying for you.

Blessings In Christ,
