Need Some Help For My Parents -

I am new to this site and am hoping for any suggestions out there! My dad spent 7 months in he hospital - back surgery, stroke, neuropathy, kidney issues, feeding tube, etc. We finally got him home the end of November and he just recently had his feeding tube removed and is on his 2nd week of physical therapy (yay!). The problem my mom is having is that my dad is not able to walk to get himself to the bathroom and when he needs to urinate it's right now and he goes a lot. They have tried the Depends, condom catheters, wraps, adhesives, bottles, mattress covers, pads; you name it. He can't get himself in enough of an upright position when he's sitting to get everything into the bottle so he makes a mess. At night he moves around and the catheter pulls or comes off. They spend all day and night dealing with this and my dad is getting really depressed because he is so embarrassed and feels so unclean. I feel like if we could just figure out a routine or combination of products out there that would work for him we could get over this hump and see some brighter days.

I'm sorry to hear that your dad is going thru this. There are companies out there that will send free samples for incontinence products like pull ups and diapers.I know HDIS is one.You can look got more on the internet.I hope this helps some.

If Depends is the only brand of diaper you’ve tried, a big part of your problem could probably be solved by trying a better product. I would recommend ConfiDry 224/7, BetterDry, or Rearz Inspire+ InControl, or NorthShore MegaMax, all of which are very much better brands of diapers that should be able to handle your father’s large voids without leaking.

Hi, what about bladder training and trying to get him to the toilet at regular times throughout the day whether he needs to go or not, perhaps this might help him stay drier for longer?

Only other thing I can think of is as everyone else has said and to get some good fitting, comfortable pads to wear. They don't necessarily need to be pull ups but the tab style pads can be pulled down and up again with tight fitting pants over the top. Wearing pants over the pad will help him feel normal again and less like he is wearing a diaper?

Welcome to the board and there are so many people on here who e been struggling with Incontinence for a good part of there lives I would consider many of the experts and the advice you will get is going to be time tested so take what they tell you knowing we’ve been through many products, meds, and procedures and although no two people are alike and we all have to find the best solution for ourselves the knowledge shared he is real and valuable. Incontinence is a real struggle and can lead us Into dark places but with the right support it is manageable and you can live and be happy with it!! I wish you all the best of luck with your dad!!

Wow! Such great feedback! I will definitely look into the other options suggested here. It’s hard to know where to start and it all feels so overwhelming. I really appreciate the advice and suggestions.
