Long car journeys. Diapers

Hi, i use pull ups and pads during the day. But for long journeys away from a loo, it is not enough, and i need to do a 6 hour drive with my family and mother-in-law. .... so this is tricky. I can stop at service stations on the way to Cornwall ( i am the driver), but i think i will need more than a pull up, and they are a bit of a hassle to change. I think i need to use tena slips, or tena flex. But i do not have experience with either. Any advice ?? Thank you.

@Rowan

As a bedwetter only I do not have the issues of worrying about long trips like you do, except when I am not the one driving and I might go to sleep. I only bedwet occasionally so most of the time that is not an issue, but you just never know. So like on long lfights I wear Depends real fits just incase.

Judging by your post these may not be enough in your opinion or as easy to change. I must admit in the times I have worn them I have never wet in them so no need to change. I can see how that can be a problem.

I guess my message is one of hope and understanding that we all face difficult situations. I hope others can give you better direction.

I am one year after radical pros and am still leaking but not like some. I found that using Depends with a pad for Light leaks works. The pad is easily changed. The depends for overflow if it happens. Biggest problem is the bulk in the pants. Hard to keep pants up where you want.

Hi

You may wish to try pads (available on ebay). They are advertised as reusable, and they are, but you may with to just throw them out after they do their job.

Hi Rowan,

I do not have experience with tena slips or tena flex but I am assuming they are the brief style of diapers as opposed to pull ups.

First off I would recommend on switching just for the capacity and leak minimization.

Also they are much easier to change when on the go as you do not have to remove your shoes etc to change.

I use full briefs either froM confidry, abena, rearz or mega max when I am doing long drives or just days when I am not close to a washroom.

Hope this helps, or at least is helpful.

That is helpful, thank you everybody. I was not really sure if you can put them on without lying down. And also I'm worried about the bulk, I do not want my mother in law noticing.
Yes,. I think when you say the brief type, that is the traditional style, with tapes, not a pullup. Thank you.

@Rowan hi Rowan, I use the tena slips all the time. Once you get used to where to put the tapes they are easy to put on and to change. I change mine standing up. I also put some boxers over the top to keep them covered up. Cheers Phil

For long trips, I use pads. My family and friends know that when they travel with me, a six hour drive will be eight. When I say we need a bathroom. They know we NEED to stop. I have learned to accept this, and my spouse, has learned too! Lol. My issue is, if we don’t stop, then I get bowel incontinence. Scary!
But, I do wear pads (sorry, went and looked, and I don’t have the package anymore to tell you the brand.). But, I wear them for leakage. Travels are more enjoyable for all.

Thanks for that. I mentioned it to my wife just now, who said that her mum knows I have bladder problems. And my mother in law is a nurse, so she understands... Thanks for all the messages everyone. I have a plan ! ... Tema slips, stop when I need.

Hi All,
Rowan, Northshore has some pullon underwear that are pretty good if that helps. I have found their team of specialists to be very comfortable to speak with and their products are very good too. They also have inserts of different sizes that can fit inside your underpants and are held in place with adhesive strips that are fixed to the pad.
Nice to hear from everyone 🙂 Haply Holidays all!

Jim

Hi @Rowan, have you tried external or condom catheters? This is a good solution for long rides:

FOR MEN: Stadium Pal
FOR WOMEN: Stadium Gal

Available on StadiumPal.com and BioRelief.com

I can emphatically state, as a urine incontinent man, that even 1 hour for me in a pull-up diaper would be a disaster. I’m not familiar with what’s available in the U.K. but I’d see if you can get samples and try them. I’d think you’d want a maximum absorbency product. A tape-on diaper is easily changed standing up. Simply stand and lean against a wall, with the open diaper between your butt and the wall. Pull it up between your legs and fasten the tapes. I do all my tape-on diaper changes standing up. I do wear cloth diapers at home and a cloth diaper with pins is definitely not a stand-up diaper change.

That is useful. Thank you. I used two tena slips, changed standing up. It worked great, and they were more comfortable. I get tena pants paid for by the NHS ( free), so I ll use them when I can. Useful tip. I will try that next time.

@Rowan Oh for an NHS here across the pond! I know it’s source of contention but our for-profit health care in the USA is your worst nightmare. With my health issues, I worry constantly about rising costs snd decreasing insurance coverage. I pay 100% for my diapers and sizable copays for my medical care and meds. Last year, one of my meds that ran about $1800.00 per month doubled in price to about $3700.00 per month. Why? Because then can. I’m fortunate to have a state supplement for disabled workers but I’m no longer eligible for it when I turn 65 this year. So I’ll be scrambling over my options in finding affordable coverage.

Love your NHS!
