Introduction, cause of bed wetting, recommended product?

Hello,

I'm a 21-year-old single male who has had nightly enuresis since I was a child. It usually comes in sets where I'll leak urine for several days straight, sometimes even multiple times in a single night, and then I'll be fine for days. I've also never had alcohol or anything like that.

When I do get it to stop it's probably mainly because I don't drink enough water, for that very reason, to be fair. If I drank enough water maybe it would happen more like every night.

I'm a little confused though about exactly what is going on. So I definitely do have to pee several times a day and many times throughout the night-what's weird here is that during the day there have been times when I've been able to hold a large amount of urine, even though most of the time when I have to go during the day or at night it's not really THAT much; sometimes it's a decent amount though. So I'm assuming that's probably OAB/small bladder?

But what happens to me exactly at least a good amount of the time when I wet the bed is my p. will get hard and push out and then even worse it hits against my underwear and that makes me have to go. I'm not sure if this happens all the time but at least a good bit of the time.

So when that happens in the middle of the night and there is a decent amount of urine in my bladder, in my sleep, before I can do anything, I'll feel these automatic, basically completely involuntary, uncontrollable spasms where urine just gushes out. It almost feels like I chose to gush out urine but it happens in my sleep when I can't actually make the decision. (Sometimes I'll be dreaming about it as well and I really have to go and in the dream I urinate somewhere in the toilet or the trash can or something but it's not always correlated).
It'll be GUSH 1 and then GUSH 2 and then GUSH 3 within like 20 seconds or even less. And then it's too late. I can still go to the bathroom but it's not like a WHOLE lot comes out, some but not a whole lot. The automatic gush thing is ALWAYS what happens even if my p. might not be hard.

It's been really bad since last weekend when I finally looked into the problem. Now if I just think about it my p. starts enlarging and it makes it really difficult especially since it then pushes against my underwear. Though it also seems like it's so sensitive to my sleeping position all of the sudden, almost like I have to sleep on my back. Last night it got so bad that I eventually just had to get out of bed and do something else-I couldn't fall asleep.

So then I finally fell asleep and then of course about 90 minutes after voiding as much as I possibly could and then going to bed, in my sleep I gushed out urine. That's literally what happens. It's like every two hours. Like go to the bathroom at 1:30, make a mess at 3:00. Possibly even again in two more hours, and a few times I think it's happened a third time in a single night.

And the weird thing is that I'm not sure if this happens always but at least often, some of the urine (it's hard for me to measure exactly how much is leaked, but at least a medium amount usually I would say sometimes maybe less if I catch it before it's worse) comes out as this super thick mucuousy substance and it'll be all over my underwear. What is the cause of that? Sometimes my mouth will excrete a little bit of mucous too, not sure if that's related.

And then last night I just couldn't fall back to sleep. My p. kept being large, I couldn't really ever get it to go down so there was probably still urine stuck in my bladder maybe. I would even leak a few drops in my underwear while I was trying to fall asleep. Maybe part of it is fear since I haven't bought pads yet so it's hard to fall asleep when I worry it will just go everywhere if I already have to go when I fall asleep but idk. All I know is I literally went to the bathroom multiple times (and actually peed a relatively little but fair amount) and I just couldn't fall asleep.

Also, sometimes I'll leak (don't know if my p. is large in this case) after severe emotional trauma/stress, so I'm assuming that's a slightly different issue.

Does that sound like OAB? How come the urine is so mucousy? Does my p. being really hard make sense and what's the best way to overcome that especially when I get the pads? And is it super dangerous for me to constantly not have as much water as I should? At this point my body is so used to that that I almost would have to ease my body into it. The past couple weeks (before I researched this) I haven't really been having that much water and haven't been feeling as good as possible (although case in point, I actually made it dry a while until last night.)

Also, do you think something like this (https://www.liveanew.com/la-fqp-pl100-config-la) would be a good idea for me for making it through an entire night drinking a NORMAL amount of water (more than I usually drink now)? Or should I get something that can do two entire bladder leaks? I mean there are multiple gushes but like is that a problem? Especially if I leak at 2 and then again at 4 let's say, would this be able to handle it the whole night? What about a third time? I don't know what is considered a full bladder but I just don't know if it's really a full bladder every time. Because I know the product guide linked to the NAFC website bases it on the amount of bladder losses so like apparently this can do 1. It's just that I would kinda rather have something I could put in my underwear and just wear it all day (mainly so I can nap and also to make the OAB gotta go feeling less stressful since I know I do have a backup) rather than have to wear a pull-up that's like what four year olds wear. But if I have to do it I have to do it. I guess another question is do I really need to replace it each time or can I just wait until the morning (which I'd much rather do.)

Any thoughts? Thanks.

UPDATE: So I wrote most of this post in the middle of last night when I had to give up a second time on going to sleep after I got out of bed when I leaked urine-maybe I should have just stayed wet and leaked more idk.

But when I finished this post this morning, wide awake in my pajamas, my personal area felt kinda wet and I just discovered I leaked a small but more than a few drops amount of urine, as I was submitting this. Ouch. Other than when I napped once, it's never happened during the day. This was enough so that there was a 1 inch diameter spot on my pajamas. So I guess would that further make sense for it to be OAB?

Also, I literally had like 4-6 ounces of water at the most, 11 or 12 hours ago (around 9PM) and I don't know if I had any before that since lunch or something. And look how much havoc lol.

Forst, talk to your doctor. They will likely refer you to a urologist who can do tests to measure bladder capacity and find issues.

Second. I wouldn't wear a pullup at night in your situation. Its probably not gonna hold and itll leak as you move. I would recommend looking at overnight diapers. They hold more, and leak way less often. For daytime its trial abd error. Id say start with Depend Gaurds at the drug store and work your way up. Pullups can be a good option in the daytime depending on your situation, but if you havs significant issues, diapers are really the most reliabke/least likely to leak/fail.

It’s interesting you say that because if you look at this guide, I don’t know what one large gush is considered but I would say mine are probably medium. And when you click it says for one full bladder-those all the pads. And then 1-3 bladder losses are the pull-ups and I definitely don’t need more than that.

Like the example insert I gave says: They can be worn for light, heavy, or overnight incontinence and are recommended if you are currently in a toileting program. These pant liners are absorbent enough for overnight use, and can also be used during the day due to the discreet and quiet cloth-like outer fabric.

Or like this pull-up says: The Prevail Men’s Pullup Diaper is a perfect option for men experiencing moderate to heavy urinary and stress incontinence. If you experience sudden urinary surges, then this pull-on style diaper is perfect for you…Prevail for Men Pullup Diaper is designed for men experiencing stress and heavy urge incontinence with up to two full bladder losses.

I would say mine is definitely no more than heavy urge incontinence and definitely not more than two.

It’s interesting, would you say my situation is that bad?
I don’t have any benchmarks so I was like it isn’t everything, I don’t there if there is a huge spot on the sheet usually, etc. But maybe it is heavy idk. Though I guess if I had enough water yeah maybe.

Also during the day is pretty good, it’s mainly naps.

Its not as simple as looking at some charts. Those are good guides but ultimately everyone's situation is different so you really just need to try different things. Call a vendor like north shore, they can help with samples of everything. And dont be surprised if you need different products for different situations. Long car trips vs work vs sitting around the house may actually call for three differant products depending on your issues.

Also be careful limiting water. Id say drink when thirsty till satisfaction until a doctor tells you otherwise. Dehydration can lead to all sorts of bad things.

One thing that can help some people is eliminating soft drinks and caffeen. They can irritate the bladder. Drink plenty of water tho

Hi there and hope you can get some help here.

I would urge you to see a doctor and discuss this with them. They may offer medication which might slow urine production down through the night. I wouldn't hold back on drinking fluids, the less you drink, the more concentrated your urine will be and that will aggravate your bladder. Try to drink between 2 and 3 litres of fluid through the day and try to void every 2 hours if you can train your bladder to void that way, you might not store it up to void through the night.

Invest in some good mattress protectors and in my opinion, those pant liners won't be effective but all means try some and see if they do help.

Best of luck and keep us informed how you get on.

Did your parents not take you to the Dr's as a child or have you been seen by a Dr as an adult and if so what did they say?

“comes out as this super thick mucuousy substance and it'll be all over my underwear”

“my p. will get hard and push out and then even worse it hits against my underwear”

“My p. kept being large, I couldn't really ever get it to go down”

This sounds like a fetish porno post to me. I’ve never had a male partner who had to pee because of erections. In fact, my partners haven’t been been able to pee when erect. So this sounds very suspect to me.

Wow youre right. To be honest i hadnt read the whole post thoroughly. Its just too long for a quick reply. This thread should prob be locked and deleted.

Please, if the easiest thing is to lock the thread that’s okay with me.
But please, I absolutely don’t want this to be pornographic. I’m just describing my condition.

I come from a very sheltered background and I don’t know that much how this stuff works. I’m not sexually active at all, that’s all I meant by saying I’m single.

Please forgive me. I’m just confused as to what is happening but I should probably just see a doctor once I can get my own insurance.

Also, I’m wondering if I have a urinary tract infection and that’s why everything has been going wacko the past week or so.

Advice on water is probably good.

Sorry, I absolutely didn’t mean to be pornographic whatsoever, that’s why I abbreviated it but I can see why that can be very troubling.

Sorry.

@andy1050 Apparently the moderator doesn’t agree because 10 hours later, this post is still here. I’ve had a post removed before and they took it down within minutes.

I honestly didn't think the post was that bad. Incontinence plays a big part in sex, relationships and intimacy and because the poster is new, I thought it was ok as he is experiencing issues as a single male. This forum is a great place to discuss our genuine problems and I encourage us all to be open and help each other. If it offends you to read someone's intimate problems, just press the delete button and move on to the next post.
