Embarrassed and Skeptical

Hi all!
I'm new here but happy I've found this place. I have what you'll call primary enuresis; I've never had a dry day in my life. I'm currently the age you see there in my name and have lived my life in shame sometimes just laying in my bed, taking it all in. I want to visit a doctor because I've tried everything from supplements to not drinking after 7p.m to adult diapers but they all seem to minimize the problem, not make it go away. I wanted to ask anyone has been to a doctor? What type: primary or specialist? Has it worked? And how did you get the courage to do so?

Thank you in advance.

See an urologist. They specialize in the urinary tract of both men and women. They will do all sorts of tests to narrow down the issues. You're on the right track now on using protection. I wouldn't use any type of medication unless approved by your doctor. There are many side effects. I have been a bedwetter my whole life, and been to many doctors only to find out nobody can find a reason for my bedwetting. They think it's caused by that I am a deep sleeper. They told me to handle it as I see best. That's why I chose diapers and plastic pants. Good luck on finding a solution.

You should see a urologist but I’d start with your primary doc. Let him/her know everything about your health, not just the one issue. They are there to connect the dots and find the causes. Let them refer you to a urologist if they can’t take care of it.

I did primary care doctor and was referred to urologist back when I was close to your age. Seen one as a kid also. In total I have seen 4 different urologists in my life and after a lot of poking and prodding never got a cure. Fortunately I'm not wet every night so I feel for you as I'm pretty much just wet 2 or 3 nights a week. Unfortunately now that I'm pushing age 50, so over the last 15 years or so, I have just given up on a cure.

Thank you so much for the advice! How much did you spend for their services?

Thank you for sharing, its a relief to know that I'm not alone. I've getting used to the fact that there probably won't be a cure. Did you have to go through any therapy to help accept the fact? I'm thinking of trying..

Tell them your whole history. It is possible you have an imbalance in your hormones. There is one specific hormone that effects night time urine. Please trust that a medical professional will treat you with respect. If you are female, ask for a physician that specializes in urogynecology. Best wishes in any case.

First just be honest with the doc, they’ll ask what concerns you have, mention this as well as anything else that may be concerning you. They’ll do an exam and ask a bunch of questions about your health and lifestyle. Be honest and they will help.

As to cost it all depends on insurance. If you don’t have it thru work or from a spouses job, look into Medicaid in your state.

I've seen a couple of psychiatrists about it and tapped into a lot of childhood trauma which appears to be the main driver for my wetting issues. At this point for me it's a subconscious thing and I never finished my visits to work through because of insurance coverage issues.
I can't be sure they would have helped but I can definitely recommend trying thst route to at the very least help with some of the anxiety that might come with the problem. I kind of convinced myself that I'm just broken in regards to my night issues but part of that is on me for not aggressively pursuing the psychiatrist route. Maybe it will help you...

I've had childhood trauma as well! Excuse the exclamation point but I can't believe there are people like me; it's really bringing me to tears. I think I'm going to conclude to visit my primary doctor and explain everything. It's not much but it's a start. Thank you.

From what I'm hearing from everyone, I'll make sure to be honest. I know I need to work up the courage to. Thank you again!

Hi 23,
Glad you are here, you definitely aren’t alone with this condition. Hope you get a chance to talk with your doc. They should be able to at minimum help make things a little better for you and get you a referral to see a urologist. Glad you took this first step.

Have a nice Sunday!

Hi there and welcometo our club!

Everyone here is very kind and accepting and will help you deal with your wetting issue.

I'm so sorry you're embarassed to talk to a Dr about it. Believe me, Dr's have heard everything. They are not judgemental people; they only want to help you. Just make a list of everything you want to talk about, take adeep breath and practice asking all your questions until you feel more comfortable saying it. It doesn't have to be a scary, dreaded thing. Look forward to finding a treatment that will change your life for the better.

I wish you the best! Please let us know how it goes!

Hello 23 .Welcome to our world. Be not afraid dearie. Walk tall and speak up. The doctors are the ones who should be ashamed. We can get to the moon but our people are in diapers. I wish you luck but it's up to you to seek your cure.
SPEAK UP.

You need to see a urologist. If you have a PPO you can just make the appointment...if an HMO you prob need a referral from your primary.

Uro's see this everyday....they won't shame you over it, but it's natural to feel embarrassed about these types of problems. I remember my first appointment and I went in with dread, but he put my mind at ease pretty quickly...nothing ended up working for me and I'm in diapers, but it's worth a shot.

Hi 23andpee, After talking on this site I hope you are encouraged to check with a urologist. As everyone here has said they have heard it all before so please don't feel you are presenting with anything unheard of. They can find out what's going on and explain what options are available. after all people of all ages consult with urologists. Just make sure the urologist is board-certified by the national urological society (not sure the exact name of it) which is a good sign that he or she really knows his/her stuff! Good luck and tell 'em what's on your mind!
