I think a catheter would probably help to reduce the mess, distress and inconvenience of leakages but would risk urinary tract infections.
I became doubly incontinent following a spinal injury and paralysis in 2013. Partly because my hand movement is severely impaired, a suprapubic catheter was installed; before that I used urethral catheters for a few months. I used to get UTIs but I find that these can now be prevented by using Nitrofurantoin. I started by taking 50mg per day but after a few weeks started to reduce it. Now I take one 50mg tablet about once a week.
