Cloth diapering procedure; Morning and at Night

After retiring 5 years ago I transitioned to using cloth diapers unless travelling more than 4 hours away from home.

While working it was 2-3 disposables a day and 1-2 per night.

Living in a rural area I have tired of making multiple runs to the dump with heavy, smelly disposables 3 times+ a week.

We are fortunate to have a washer / dryer, and I generally launder the diapers on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday as a primary schedule.

As a production engineer I created & used work instructions / procedures on a daily basis.

With dementia running in the family, I put together a rather detailed instruction (Word document) that I review periodically and have revised over the last couple years based on experience.

I currently can get by with just a morning and evening change but may need to add an afternoon one as over the years I have required more absorbency during the day thus the diaper is getting too bulky to easily conceal.

At night bulkiness is not a problem for a 10-hour period of bedtime.

If anyone wants, I will post the written procedures I have created if it may help out in some way.

It is also applicable to a care giver.

Let me know if there is any interest.

It is very smart how you are preparing for the future given your family history. This kind of organization matters a lot.

Preparing ahead is a key part to being in diapers. Always thinking ahead and being well prepared especially when out and about. I look forward to reading your procedures.

I basically wear prefold gauze diapers with gauze boosters (inserts) and plastic pants at night. No issues with leaking. During the day I also use Purity brand flat diapers with one gauze insert and plastic pants mainly at home but have also gone out of the house on errands wearing them. I also use contour prefold gauze diapers and all in one gauze diapers from time to time. My vendors are All Together Enterprise/Adult Cloth Diaper Company and Changing Times Diaper Company. Best cloth diapers by far for adults. I also use disposables as well from ABU, Incontrol, Northshore Care Supply (Megamax Diapers), Wellness Superio, and Tykables to name a few. These diapers are basically heavy duty disposables. I agree with Joey about preparing is the key to being in diapers. I’ve been back in diapers for the last 10 years due to having a severe UTI which had turned into sepsis and almost died. I’ve adjusted to being back in diapers 24/7/365. Nothing to be ashamed of. No issues with diaper changes that I do myself. Was diapers every two days. My next goal is to use cloth diapers when I’m away from home when shopping or out and about during long period of time. Having the right size of a diaper bag well stocked is a good idea. Have not tried stocking my diaper bag using cloth diapers yet. If I do I have to make sure I have sealed bags to put the wet diapers in for storage. Any ideas I’ll take. Feel free to replay.

Changing times time company is a great company. I grew up wearing cloth and still do at times. Are great for overnight and lounging around at home. At win them out and about but not too often mainly on road trips. You would need definitely a larger style diaper bag/backpack, regardless of the size of the diaper cloth does take up space. I’d start out with the small grocery plastic bags to wrap things up. I’m blessed that someone else does change my diaper so that’s keeps things simple for me. I look forward to reading how you make out with wearing cloth out and about on a regular basis.

Thanks for the reply, Joey. At home I use 2 BUSCH diaper pails with PLANET WISE diaper pail liners which work great until wash day. These have metal handles are the largest capacity of the two they sell. I use one for wet diapers and the other one for waterproof pants. Been looking for large wet bags with either a zipper or drawstring for in the car storage while out and about.

I am interested to hearing if you find a good storage system for your car when out and about. we use large kitchen plastic trash bags. At home same two diaper pails that we keep in out garage until wash day. Not easy finding a large size diaper pails. It is good to separate the diapers and plastic pants. in nice weather we line dry. never too old to learn new stuff

I have been thinking about using large size ziplock bags. Bigger than your typical kitchen ziplock bags. I know they make them. I know it’s easier to wear disposables while out and about but I also want to get into the habit of incorporating wearing cloth diapers when I’m out and about. I do have different cloth diapers I can use when out of the house for diaper changing. All gauze. Contours, prefolds and even Rearz/Incontrol snap on gauze diapers. I use them at home as well as “PURITY” flat diapers. Still haven’t got the hang of it yet changing a cloth diaper while standing. Would prefer a family/handicap restroom with an adult size table for diaper changes. No problem with standing up and changing a disposable diaper.

agreed disposables are far easier changing in a standing position. i am blessed my wife handles my diaper changes for me. whenever i am in cloth i have to be laying down even with the newer style pocket diapers and all in one cloth. usually i am in pin on style cloth. for the quick convenience we do use disposables usually when out and about places because i will normally need a diaper change. there have been and i know there will be outings in cloth diapers. cloth diapers are the preferred of wife. We have always had either a mini van, station wagon, or nowadays SUV (RAV4) that is a mobile changing station for me. we look for the family style restrooms all the time. more and more places are having adult changing station style restrooms which are wonderful because there are adult changing tables in them. we have seen those in the airports and certain amusement parks. My dad is in diapers as well and he almost always wears only cloth diapers very old school. whenever i am with my dad i am always in cloth kind of being respectful of him.

That’s great to hear. I am married as well however I do my own diaper changes and washing diapers and plastic pants. Not a problem. Would be nice to have help with diaper changes. Maybe someday. And yes, it’s nice to see family style restrooms are being supplied with adult diaper changing stations. Unfortunately I can’t fit on this Koala changing tables on the wall. Lol. 😂 with be going shopping shortly and will wear a cloth diaper. Thanks for you feedback Joey.
