Benefits of Cloth Nappies

Since swapping to Rearz cloth overnight pre fold nappies and plastic pants for sleeping it has been an absolute pleasure to wake up in the morning and not immediately feel and smell that I have had an accident. I used plastic backed disposables for ages before crossing over to the dark side and while they were better than the cloth backed disposables, which did nothing for odour control, I would still wake up to that that tell-tale smell and increased bulk between my legs, so my first thought of the day was always a negative one of, “great, another wet morning”, rather than any positive thoughts of what the day would bring. Yes, cloth nappies are bulkier and require laundering, but for me they are well worth it as I actually enjoy waking up again.

Good news that something beneficial to you is eco-friendly as well. I have never considered cloth nappies, I am constantly surprised at how good I find the disposable ones.

@abigailbear yeah, I’m using more water to manage the laundry but there’s less plastic going in to land fill at least. Not sure if one negates the other. Do you mind me asking what disposables you use? I still use disposables when I’m away from home overnight and during the day and am always keeping an ear open for recommendations.

I would live to hear more details about your process and experience. I have tried but always had wicking leaks on the edges. I would love to hear about how you utilize them and launder them.

@wetdad wicking leaks around the leg holes on to your sheets? I wear one night prefold with one booster and use one large pin on each side to fasten it. I use high waisted Gary Euroflex plastic pants and just make sure that the leg holes are sitting as high as possible up my thighs, and that the plastic pants are as high as possible up my waist. I have had a couple of leaks when I was wearing the legs lower down my thighs, but haven’t had issues since changing my method. I think that the thick flat seams on my plastic pants really help with containment, also.

As far as laundering is concerned, I wash them with all my other washing on a regular cold cottons cycle as soon as I get up in the morning. I just use a cheap store-brand laundry liquid. Nothing fancy. I either line dry or dry on a rack inside depending on the weather. I know it’s frowned upon due to the ageing effect on the plastic, but I machine wash my plastic pants in a delicates bag and hang them up on my bathroom door handle to dry. I found that I couldn’t get rid of the pee smell with hand washing.

I use Boots Staydry Night Pants (for women - they have a men's range also).
