Young female adult, stressed and hoping for answers

Hi everyone,

I am a 26 year old female with worrisome urinary incontinence issues that are getting worse recently. I am experiencing major bed wetting every night now, and I don't even wake up when it happens - this has been going on for about 3 months - prior to this over the last couple of years this happened just once in a while so I didn't worry about it...although clearly I should have :(
During the day, I often have to rush to the bathroom. When I have to hold it in, it is painful. I also often feel extreme pressure in my bladder. Sometimes I feel a need to pee but can't go.
I have been given antibiotics (for potential UTI) but they didn't help at all. I finally managed to get an appointment with a urologist and praying he can help, but it's not until November...I am frustrated and stressed and don't understand why this is happening. The more info I have, it helps my stress, so I have a few questions and hope that some of you can share your experience with me please:

1. Does anyone else have my symptoms and, if so, would you be willing to share the cause if known?
2. Are there any meds or treatments that anyone has found success with for the bed wetting?
3. Is anyone aware of a connection between IBS and incontinence? I was recently diagnosed with IBS-D due to abdominal pain, gas, bloating, etc. - although I am wondering if it's all caused by the same problem.
4. Has anyone been diagnosed that nerve damage/malfunction is causing their incontinence? I heard that is a possible cause and I worry about this due to issues I have had with my vasovagal nerve in the past (causing fainting).

Many thanks and sorry for all the questions! You guys are amazing.

Hey,

Just read your post and literally am in the same boat as you. Except everything for me was roughly two years ago.

So I have OBS (Overactive Bladder syndrome) which is what causes the lack of bladder control. The cause of it, I don't know. Possibly too much caffeine in the past, possibly poor diet, weakened pelvic floor or even mental health onset issues. I honestly don't know, all I know - is that I don't want this condition.

2. For medication; I was on myrbetriq for a while, and it worked so good for daytime issues compared to oxybutynin. Off medicine, my symptoms are sporadic - sometimes I can hold for 30 minutes or more - sometimes it's like I can only hold for 5-7 minutes.

3. I'm not sure, I have digestion issues myself; but I'm not sure if there's a link. No bowel control issues here.

4. I'm not sure, what scares me is the bladder control getting worse. Some days I feel so defeated by cooping myself up in my bedroom because of my spasms. I feel like if they continue to get worse, then my body is just going to get used to that; kinda like how if you stop working out at the gym- you're gonna lose muscle mass.

Don't give up; keep going to the doctors and urologist - and ask about new medicines like the one I mentioned and see if it works for you. Prayers.

My stuff started a little over a year ago. Started with bedding wetting and need to rush to bathroom frequently. It got so bad that I got the urge to go and it just went. It was embarrassing, frustrating. I was going through 5 to 6 pull ups a say. I switched to tabbed diapers and found a higher quality that work.

The forum has been helpful knowing I am not alone. I have had multiple MRI's and CAT scans. Still no sign of cause. I am working with my Urologist to figure ways to manage through. Keep your head up. Know that this does not define us,

@Jh2025, some of what you describe sounds like interstitial cystitis. I've struggled for years with pain as my bladder fills, a feeling of having to pee even when my bladder is empty, painful spasms that lead to incontinence, and problems with needing to pee frequently and urgently.

I have ulcerative colitis, and my IC is worse when my UC is flaring. That's a bit different from your IBS, but my urologist has been emphatic that there's a strong correlation between GI symptoms and IC symptoms.

I'm sorry it's such a long wait for you to see the urologist. It's horrible when you're suffering and can't get in to see a doctor about it.

JH2025 = Be sure you get a blood test after you talk with the doctor to see if there is something that might show up there. Sometimes weight gain can cause pressure on your nerves and muscles. It sounds like maybe a lack of muscle control, it could be any of a lot of different things. Meanwhile try meditation and wear protection while you wait to see the urologist. I imagine this is causing you a lot of stress which adds to what's going on. Mark off the days on your calendar until your visit. Sometimes that relieves some stress. We'll be anxious to hear what your experience is and the diagnosis and treatment.

The first part of what you mentioned sounds like Interstitial Cystitis possibly, but that is a diagnosis of exclusion, rather than simply being tested. You can message me for more info on that if you want.

1. I share most of your symptoms, cause is unknown as of yet, but the Interstitial Cystitis could be an explanation, as could be OAB theoretically, though pain isn't common. Interstital Cystitis can cause bladder pain before during or after urination, spasms, pain while holding it, and more lovely issues. With not feeling at night, this makes me wonder if its a nerve issue, but I am not a doctor.
2. I usually have daytime issues only, I don't leak much but I am a side sleeper. I know people who side sleep tend to have less issues from what Ive read.
3. Interstitial Cystitis and IBS tend to coexist. I have IBS-C and this can be part of pelvic floor dysfunction.
4. Urologists aren't typically able to figure this part out from what i've seen so in this case you would want to see a Neurologist too. I am going to get my issues looked at and see if it has something to do with nerve or heart issues.

If you want to chat more about it or vent, feel free to reach out to me. I hope you get answers, but also if your doctor isn't helpful, get a second opinion. I waited years for help I should have gotten long ago.

Hello, good thing you reached out here there is a wide variety of folk here of all ages and many different medical situations.
We are not qualified to give a diagnosis but some simple things that can affect incontinence are:
Yes, I've read IBS can cause urinary incontinence on a fb site called ibs.nrt that like a few medical conditions I never asked for my fb is kindly posting on my wall.
Possible nerve damage from a fall or other nerve damage yes
Possible sexual trauma or even mental abuse could be childhood
Dietary choices can make a difference in urgency
Avoid coffee tea SODA lemon or citrus products in general
Drink plain clean water and drink it throughout the day. This will be your best help once your body is regularly hydrated, something like an 8 ox glass of plain water hourly. substitute water for all drinks i cannot emphasize this enough!!
Apart from medication which has a variable track record of side there are medical devices that can help.
Tell your doctor all the medical conditions know of.
Please get some pads for daytime support for urgency.
Clean your bedas best you can. Lay baking soda on the mattress and rub it in. Vacuum up later. Put a waterproof mattress cover on your bed. Get a pad for over the sheets. Try different store brand pull up disposable underwear for maximum or night use. Its a step to cope as going through a medical supply company for heavy duty seems like a big deal at this stage when one is still unable to believe ones body is behaving badly.
Feel free to come to the forum for support!

I have nerve damage caused by my diabetes. I only found out about my diabetes when I went to the doctors about my incontinence and bedwetting.
