Three seconds of terror today

I am thankful that I am alive to be writing this as I suddenly found myself in the middle of what seemed to be a road rage situation.
I was food shopping and I drove out of the store to go home, which is two miles away. I turned right, or northbound onto the highway. There are three lanes at that point, and then shortly the lanes narrow down to just one. I looked left and there was no northbound traffic in sight. I got out onto the highway and drove for maybe less than a minute. Just at the point where the road goes to one lane, I saw a dark colored sedan speeding along to my left. just inches from my side. The speed limit is 45 mph at that point so obviously he was going faster, But to my horror at the same exact time I saw the sedan, there was a huge red pickup truck speeding by me on my right side, also just inches away. The pickup was at the point where the roadway narrowed and he passed me like I was standing still and didn't even care the road had narrowed.
At the time I heard no sounds, it was like watching a movie with the mute button on. Didn't even hear the radio.
If any one of us had turned even slightest degree, it would have been all over because the wreck would have been horrendous, as fast as the sedan and the pickup were going. And I was caught right in the middle!
Dazed, I just drove home, hoping to flag down a patrol car but that didn't happen. Once home, I just plopped my groceries down and called the police. I really had to work to keep my composure.
I remember when I learned to drive my dad told me "a car is a weapon." Boy, how true that is! I could have been on the wrong end of one of those weapons!
And it all took place in something like three seconds.
I think that was the closest call I have ever had! I'm still thinking about it hours later!

@billliveshere oh man i'm glad you're alright! I live in Florida as well and let me tell you the drivers are some of the most dangerous you'll ever encounter anywhere. I've frequently seen videos of folks getting out of their cars to confront each other down here. Very scary and sad. Glad you're alright!

Oh @KTrout73, is that ever the truth!!!! The roads are just like the lawless wild west here! And it is scary and sad, no truer words were ever spoken! Thank you for your good wishes!

That does terrify you to the one. You did everything right and still the whiskies show up like lightening bolts. I saw a lot of what you described in my time in Florida but never one on either side.
Really glad you got home safely!

Hi Maymay, thank you and they did literally show up like lightning bolts as you said. Just be thankful you have never seen one on either side of you because I wish I hadn't seen that today. I wish I could have left the store five seconds later!

Take it as a gift, this was NOT your time.
I hope you can release and relax from the trauma, I know it lodges in our versy bones to go through that type of experience.

Terrifying is the right word. I just read an article on ProPublica about people who indulge in that kind of risky behavior. And it will probably take you a day or two to get over how close you came to the end of your life. The driver's education teacher told my granddaughter's class the same thing - a moving vehicle is a weapon.

Hi maymay, Thank you again for your support. I have no doubt someone was watching out for me and you're right it is a gift, one that I really appreciate! I still keep thinking about it and still getting choked up about it as I have been all day.

Hi Rita, I still get choked up thinking about it and it's evening now and still.... Not only thinking about the end of my life in just seconds but the possibility of being airlifted from the scene to Orlando, surgery, ICU's, and all of that.
Thinking about this today brought to mind a man I did a story for the paper in Winter Haven. Bert Hamilton travels around giving inspirational talks on a life-changing experience. He was one of only very few survivors on that Air Florida 737 that crashed in the Potomac in Washington in a snowstorm. He was going to Tampa on a business trip but for some reason he said he didn't really want to go although he usually likes those trips. This time before leaving for the airport he told his wife he loves her and also felt a range of emotions as he told his 16-year-old son the same thing. It was almost a premonition. His advice is to take the time to tell people you love that you love them because you may never get another chance again.
I emailed a very good friend today to tell her what happened and I did tell her how much she means to me. I knew I had to do it while I had the chance.

@billliveshere Thank Goodness your ok, Drivers out there today are so dangerous. Best advice I could give is dont give into their little game of rage, let them leave and shure enough they'll be gone. Your life is worth a lot more than some disgruntled driver.

That’s scary! And I’m glad that you’re okay, experiencing something like that is never easy. I’ve seen similar things here in Utah, and I’ve even heard of people being shot during road rage altercations. Like others have said, protect yourself with a dash cam if you can.

Hi @LiveLifeJR and @tallnbald, It's so true that drivers out there are extremely dangerous these days. And yes it is best not to give in to their rage. But this happened faster than a bolt of lightning. At least with lightning you can tell it's coming with darkened skies and thunder. But today, nothing to give any warning. One second they weren't anywhere to be seen, the road was clear and the next second I was literally caught right in between them. I had no recourse.
I think a dash cam may just be a worthwhile investment.
There's a very good book, "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann. I've read it several times. It's about the pioneering pilots of the U.S,. airlines way back in the very early days when they flew DC-2s,(yes there was such a plane), DC-3s, Ford Tri-Motors and the like. Flying back then was much more dangerous than it is now. The message was that a pilot is always hunted by fate. He never escaped it. If fate caught up with him then he was hunted, gone! May have crashed into a mountain or broken up in a thunderstorm. I feel like that tried to happen to me today. Fate shot at me, not just one arrow but two. They both missed. I was hunted by fate but it didn't get me. A very, very sobering thought.

Scary stuff. Sounds like maybe road rage, or maybe street racers.

I've recently taught two of my teenagers to drive, and the third week start later this year. I've tried my best to instill in them an understanding of the awesome responsibility that goes with being in charge of two tons of steel and glass hurtling down the road at 70 feet a second.

Glad you're ok!

Thank you @ltapilot, It was damn scary stuff!! I hadn't thought of the possibility of street racers, even though it was in broad daylight on what is always a very busy street. They have a new building there which is some kind of a spa (or some kind of similar business) and I feel mad that there is no police station, sheriff's outpost or highway patrol quarters there as it is an extremely busy intersection. That would be the perfect place to build one.

Hi @Maymay941,It isn't quite as bad today, thank you. I went to the same store this morning and repeated the drive home. Fortunately the road was as quiet as a country lane when I got on it. My mom always told me "if you get thrown from the horse then get back on the horse!" And that's what I did. I never did like driving on that particular stretch of road. But it's the most direct and convenient way to get from where I live to Mount Dora. It's only about a quarter of a mile long and although it's relatively new, it's very poorly designed and traffic rushes in, out and across at all angles! There is a shopping center, a bank a big Lowe's and a CVS all on that stretch of road so you know it's busy! You really have to keep on your toes and pray!

That was pretty scary to read. Really feel for you being the one in the middle. Can't imagine how I'd feel. Glad you were oaky other then shaken up some I bet.

Hi Jaytee, Let's just say it was an experience I hope I don't ever, ever, ever, have to repeat again. The thing is, it happened so fast. One minute the road behind me was clear and then literally in the next second (not minute!) I saw this sedan careening by just inches from my left side and a pickup truck the size of a 747 inches from my right side tearing down the road like bats out of hell. I was shaken up about it and was haunted by that scene for the rest of the day. I kept picturing me being put into an ambulance or a medevac helicopter and being flown to Orlando.
