Taping advice

I’m struggling with the transition from pull-ups to adult diapers, my incontinence has gotten heavier and I can no longer go without the diapers at night. When my back flares up it’s 24/7 in them.

I feel less confident and embarrassed. The pull-ups were easy to conceal and change myself. The tapes and plastic landing zone on my MegaMax leave no doubt about what’s going on when I change and theres an audible crinkle when I walk.

I’ve yet to get the perfect tape job, I've tried laying in bed, and standing against a wall. I’ve read different things, but am curious as to how you guys tape up to get the perfect fit?

I deal with chronic back pain so on my bad days sometimes I struggle to do it myself. Luckily my gf is always willing to help- but I want her to do the minimum and maintain as much independence and pride as I have left.

I personally can't make transition to tape.
I hate mega max

Hopefully someone will have better ideas of brand

A product Gary wear I've seen recommend Rd here for men to reduce crinkle and such

No one has the best for you. It is a very personal issue that you need to find what works best for your body and every product is different. I personally use the wall and tops first very snug and then run my fingers from crotch to top on both sides to make the leak guards right. Then do the bottom tapes. Again doesn't work for everyone so you'll have to experiment. There will be leaks. 😀

One item usually forgotten though is prep. Almost everyone I have talked to swears by it. Take the diaper out and place on flat surface. I snap it front to back and then fold in half long ways. It creates a channel in the middle so you do not get the dredded w form. It also helps release the leak guards that can tend to stick from product to product.

Contrary to some, I never wear a plastic backed diaper during the day. They lack the discrete. Many manufacturers have decent cloth backed disposables available, and for me, I just change more often than if I was in a plastic backed version.

May’s advice to get a cover like the Gary Wear pants is great advice! I use them every day and they bridge the gap between keeping a leak in for an extra 10 minutes and having a wet spot on my outer clothing more often than not.

Wish you the best of luck finding what works for you!

I have been using the megamax for the past several years. Everyone is different and I’m a bit overweight, I find if I do the top tapes first straight and as tight as possible, and then the bottom tapes upward almost overlapping the top tapes they fit the best and I get the most mobility.

Hi I have used the mega max diaper I can get the tapes on ok I have also used the xp5000 diaper I did have problems putting it on. As for the noisy part of the diaper I can always hear it but I maybe just me not everyone would notice. I have found the mega max to be pretty quite.

No one is going to notice the audible crinkle.
Wear regular underwear over the diaper and that will cut the sound of the crinkle. i have been wearing for years, and there are very few places where the ambient noise level is so low that others can hear the crinkle anyway.
I wear XP5000 because i can adjust the Velcro tapes as needed to get them tight. and there Velcro tapes don't slip and stay in place.
i to have back problems and i have diabetes and have to pee 4 to 5 times a night, and It's very hard and painful to get up so i don't even try and just use the diaper.

I wear a Lycra based snug fitting pair of boxer briefs over them. They hold everything in place and cut down on crinkle. No fly front with firm fitting pouch holds pads in place.

Good luck!

I usually stand to tape mine on while leaning against a wall. I do the top tapes first, then the leg tapes to get a good fit there. I usually wear either boxer briefs or thin compression short over the diaper to further help hold it up and decrease noise as well. Tbh though 90% of people won't notice the noise except in a quiet environment. If they do be open and explain that you have a medical issue. Most adults won't say anything more about it. If coworkers start an issue over it then just take it to HR. It's discrimination over a medical issue. I realize that may be embarrassing, but I have done it a few times with coworkers. Most people are adults and understanding about it though.

All the advice given is great, but remember that all diapers leak. That’s why I wear vinyl pants over mine. I don’t worry about the noise because it is not loud and I’ve found if someone does notice they generally don’t say anything. I’ve been in diapers or tapes for nearly 20 years. You need to experiment with different brands to find what works best for you. Most brands offer free trials or very low cost try on’s. Try Northshore and HDIS. There are many others on internet. Like the others I stand against the wall with my right leg leaning against my wheelchair. My right leg was amputated below the knee. Doing the top tapes first works best for me, but I have done it both ways. Experiment. Good luck to you. Being incontinent is not that horrible. Most people are very understanding and want to help.

Dcny,

I understand. I remember making the transition from pads to pull-ups, then to diapers as my wetting increased over the years.
Took much time and experimenting to find the products and little fitting techniques and tricks for the best comfort and leak free experience.

Practice makes perfect, or as perfect as it can get anyway.

I like the tabbed diapers. Cloth backed and some plastic backed.
The hook and loop, Velcro style tabs are great.
Keep searching and you’ll find what fits your body type best.

All the charts say I should wear a size medium. My waist is a 34-35 and I order size large. That way with a booster pad it makes for a good fit.
Mediums don’t fit me comfortably at all. Hate it when the tabs only come around my hip onto the sides of my body.

I like the tabs to come around to the front with the bottom and top tabs to be right next to one another without separation. One right above the other, no gaps.

I can easily apply the tape tabs whether standing, leaning against a wall or some structure, but the easiest for me is just barely sitting on the edge of the bed.
I position the bottom tabs first for a good tight fit around my legs.
Then the top tabs, but not to tight, in the event I want to be able to slip the diaper off. Make a couple of fit adjustments and good to go.

I also prefer to just wear a pair of cotton underwear over the diaper.
Sometimes I’ll use some clear duct tape over the tabs to keep the tabs from popping loose or tearing the diaper. Still plenty active all day long. This works great.

Good luck, keep working at it.
Best,
Joe

As said above everyone is different and you have to experiment to find the best fitting diaper for you. I always stand to put my diaper on. I open the diaper, raise the leak guards on both sides, crease the diaper up the middle, put it between my legs and hold the back of the diaper by leaning against the wall. I tightly tape up the bottom around the legs first. This seal to me is the most critical for leaks. Then I do the top. I use Better dry right now but have used a lot of other brands. I like plastic but have used the other type to be discreet. Since I am wearing all the time being discrete is becoming less critical to me as people know or are oblivious to it. I get a better fit with the plastic with less leaks which is what is critical to me. Everyone is different but I seldom have leaks. I went to diapers to have less leaks even though there is a stigma abut them. I want to use what protection works best
Good luck.

All great guidance. I thought of one more item. I usually apply a cream before getting the diaper ready. Clean your hands really well, then handle the diaper. If you use powder like I do on the side and waistband to help keep creases from digging and the rubbing, apply that after you have the tapes done. Powder and cream will instantly kill tapes.

I also use the stand up method for disposables, usually Megamax or Betterdry (excellent diaper & quieter than Megamax) The only difference is I hold the diaper against the door jam, it makes it much easier to move around to get in place. I do the bottom tapes first. As I’ve mentioned in the past I use a pair of Kins super thin nylon taffeta waterproof pants. They are breathable and hold everything in place and are silent.
Good Luck!
