Taking College Courses

Hey guys,

I am starting to feel at home now - now that i have most of my stuff in my apartment. Just set up my computer in the bedroom - which got me thinking about taking a college class maybe every semester at our local community college.

Anybody here take any classes and what for? Thinking about taking a graphics design course or filmography course each semester to keep my mind and brain active. It's through a program that gives course opportunities to those suffering from disabilities - and I figured it would help keep me busy so my mind isn't focused on other things. I know for older folks out there, there are programs that are similar that give you the option to take one college course like myself per semester paid for - has anybody found it interesting, or useful? Also, what classes would you recommend?

Kindly,
HC

Hey Honeeecombs,
I think that is really great for you, or anybody to go back to school at whatever age! Knowledge is Priceless!
Im asking for more info regarding these classes, as in 2007 following the botched surgery I initially taught at U of I before my 8 months of mostly inpatient rehab began to learn how to walk again. Being on leave from U of I, I was still eligible for very low tuition, so I decided to go back and finally finish my Masters of Finance (all my degrees were in engineering), yet worked in global finance over 25 years! Just the week before finals I received a call from a friend at the Administrars Office at the U, and was told NOT to take my finals! I thought they were playing a very bad joke on me, but they weren’t kidding!
As it turns out, if you are receiving any type of Disability benefits, either private or Medicare they can take these benefits away! If not for my friend I would have lost a LOT! of money & Insurance Benefits. Just for reference, my Blue Cross went up over $7000.00 per month, last month I checked it was $8400.00 per month!
So please be very careful, it sounds like you’re doing GREAT! I’m really happy for you and just don’t want to see some GREEDY person take away your happiness and enthusiasm for life!
Please keep us posted, there are a ton of classes I’d like to take if the rules have changed!i

Thank you @Sprung87; I understand what you are saying. There are alot of rules and stipulations in terms of benefits for those with mental health issues as well as other disabilities. In regards to my situation - I'm not going for a degree; just taking the opportunity to take one class per semester to be able to be a part of the education system; and benefit from it - but not doing a full caseload or taking on the burden of added student debt.

Basically, this is an opportunity for me to be able to take a class at no cost - so that I can keep busy mentally and physically; but also giving me continued goals.

Sincerely,
HC

Hey there Honeeecombs. It sounds like a really wonderful idea, especially in the graphics design field. Sounds like you will be "auditing" the class. (?) You have always come across to me as having artistic abilities so this is a perfect match.
To answer your question, it has been YEARS since I've been in a formal classroom. Since I retired I have been, shall we say, "self-educating." I too worked in the fiscal field -goverment accounting- and really do miss the work. I have since created Excel spreadsheets for anything and everything imaginable!
After retirement I got into decoupage and that let me to learning about imaging types, ect.
So...this is going to be really great for you. Would you be attending during the day or in the evenings? Either way, it will not only help keep your brain sharp but will allow you to meet people more your age. A win-win situation if you ask me.
I'll be thinking of you and sending good vibes your way. If possible, please let me know how all goes. YOU GOT THIS, DUDE!!

@Honeeecombs I definitely recommend a dance class of any sort :) Tap is especially fun. You don’t need a partner for most of the dance classes. Dance can bring you to life and rev up all of your senses to rhythms, best if all, the rhythms of nature.

Knowledge is power, and, best of all, fun :). I’m really in favor of you trying something.

I agree with @Boopsie61 that you strike me as artistic and design-minded. That’s a compliment!

You know I’m a super-duper film nerd and I’ve see you talk about movies with special affection that others here don’t mention, so I think you should definitely try a film class. I sense that you would really enjoy it.

Keep us posted!

This sounds really good and you sound really balanced after many trials and tribulations!
Pic a course and try them all!

He Golden Girl bed hoto seems like a cozy direction you can layer current blankets under the spread for warmth.
Some house plants that suit the natural light would be good too
Keep doing what you're doing!
