SEARCH FOR UROLOGIST IN SW FL

I am so frustrated trying to find a GOOD urologist is SW FL. I have been suffering with bladder issue for over 2 years.
1st one was such a bad experience that I begged my PCP to find a female Urologist for me to go to. She did.
2nd was a complete scam. She did a cystoscopy which I was told could not be done in the office. It had to be done in surgery center and took 5+ hrs. 5 1/2 hrs. Turns out she and a group of other doctors own this surgery center, so all patients are told they MUST go to center. I found out that the procedure can be done in office, with minimal pain. My poor neighbor had to wait the entire time as I was told I was not allowed to drive after. I went to Google her to confirm her address for follow up, and up popped her mug shot for DUI. I saw her to get the result of my cystoscopy which was normal. She never gave me any sort of diagnosis just tried to sell me on an implant device. She did say even though this is for OAB and you don't have that, even if it helps with the pain, that's something???? So I don't have OAB but you want to implants something in my body.
3rd last Tuesday. Her PA and I got off to a rocky start. She asked me a series of yes or no questions and after finishing told me I had OAB and would need to try medications for OAB. She said there were basically 9 different medications, and I need to give each one a month to work to see which worked best for me? I told her I had just finished 2 months of Pelvic Floor Therapy, which she told me I didn't have? She then proceeded to tell me what "real" pelvic floor therapy is, and I proceeded to tell her that is exactly what I had. She must have said something to the Dr. because when the Dr. came in, she started the conversation with "I don't know if there is anything I can do for you"! WHAT! She seemed rushed and very harried. I don't need to be friends with my doctors, but she was just rude. I started crying as this entire process has been overwhelming. She never once asked me if I was ok or why I was so upset. What Dr. sees their patient so upset, in tears, and doesn't even bother to ask what's wrong. She started talking about having a hysterectomy??? for OAB? I thought I misunderstood her. Nope she asked why I didn't have one. I have a prolapse of the uterus (mild) and she told me that I need to address that as it is what was causing pain. She asked me if that made sense and I said no. I left. I have to have a CAT scan which she ordered. I live in chronic pain from other issues, and this bladder pain is literally driving me crazy. She started me on 10mg of Oxybutin. Sorry for the long vent, but I'm desperate trying to navigate this madness!

Hi @lsotinfl, I live in central Florida, north of Orlando so I'm sorry to say I don't know any urologists in southwest Florida. I do know of one in Tavares and he's a friend I see at Thanksgiving. Do you live in a city or a small town? How far would you be willing to travel to see a competent urologist?
But from reading your post you do need to get a new urologist pronto! If someone suggests a hysterectomy for OAB that is a good sign that it's time to run, not just walk to the nearest exit!
Also the fact that you were crying and they just shrugged off whatever was troubling you is another red flag! I'm sorry you had to be subjected to that. You don't need that kind of abuse and mistreatment. You are a human being who is worthy of being treated in a dignified and respectful way. You deserve so much better!
In finding someone who is a genuine urologist it is important to find out if they are board-certified by the American Academy of Urology. At least that way you'll know the doctor is highly qualified and isn't (hopefully) running some kind of a scam.
I hope this provides you with some initial guidance. Please let us know how things are going and everyone here will help in any way we can. If you need more suggestions on what to expect or questions to ask, we will certainly be happy to help you out in any way we can!

Thank you for the response. I live in Charlotte County, but do everything in Lee County. I have a great team of physicians. I love my PCP and my Orthopedic Surgeon is one of the best there is! I just can't believe what I have encountered in the world of Urology!
And thank you for agreeing that common courtesy would dictate if you see someone in tears, visibly upset, one would ask are you all right? what's wrong? can I do anything? but to just blatantly ignore them. and it's their doctor to boot! RED FLAG!!
again thank you!

I would absolutely get a pelvic exam by your OB-GYN. Uterine prolapse can cause bladder pain and OAB, and can kill you.

I would absolutely change urologists.

my Gyno and I are on top of the prolapse. As I said it is mild and very recent. My Gyno is wonderful and I trust her completely. The problem is whatever bladder issue I am experiencing seems so random. I can have 2-5 good days, then go into horrible flares. If the prolapse was causing pain, wouldn't I be in pain all the time.
Example: I was on Bactrim after giving my Gyno urine sample. Had terrible flares while taking Bactrim and once finished had 5 good days before going into horrible flares again. I've tried diet, every over the counter product, supplements prescribed by Uro. Nothing helps!
The problem has always been I can't seem to figure out what triggers these horrific flares with pain. I have blood in my urine and last Urologist said she was going to send my urine for some special testing due to the blood.

Wow. Sorry you’ve suffered so much. You really deserve a better urologist. Sorry I’m in UT and don’t know any in FL. Good luck; keep us posted!

thank you so much! I will keep posting and hopefully will find a Urologist who has an iota of empathy!
best from FL

Unhappiness with urologists has been a continuing issue with many people on this site. I have OAB and have a similar experience to you. After many procedures, I had the Rezume procedure, in the office, with someone from the manufacturer there (which meant my doctor had very little experience with the procedure) and being totally awake. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced - and that includes kidney stones. After there was NO improvement he wanted to implant a device in me. I have not seen him since. Feel I am better off without a urologist than with him. It is very frustrating. I feel for you as you cannot do without a urologist. I wish you luck in your search.

Im a man, but I agree with you. You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince
My recc would be to flat out get referred to the Mayo clinic down there. You will have a battery of tests and doctors to look over your case. I had them find intestinal cancer at the Minnesota clinic, and in Indianapolis they had been treating me for irritable colitis for 5 years. Mayo gave me the diagnosis and plan to correct by noon of the second day

Would it be a question to ask each of the physicians you are seeing to recommend a urologist. I know they are all on the one hand washes the other circuit but if a few recommend the same person it could be a good vote .
Otherwise listen to their response carefully to see who sounds like they truly know the urologist.

All of them have come "highly" recommended. My PCP recommended the first 2. She had more of a working relationship with one than the other. Number 3 was recommended by my neighbor who after seeing this Dr. was like a new woman. However, I realize now, she was given the same diagnosis as me, and is going forward with a hysterectomy!
I always ask my doctors first. But they don't want to hear anything bad about another doctor. Everyone knows about the 2nd ones issue with DUI because she is well known and it made the news here. It's very hard to be honest about your negative experience with someone they recommended.
thank you!

@lostinfl, if you are looking for a Lee County, Florida urologist you should see Dr. Alejandro Miranda-Sousa. Don't let the name fool you....his English is excellent. I have had a host of urological problems over the years. I started seeing Dr. Miranda-Sousa about 2 years ago. He is one of the finest doctors I have EVERY had. The only thing is that his practice is very busy, and getting in to see him can sometimes be an issue. But you will not be disappointed if you go to him!

I usually set my appointments the first thing in the morning, so I get right in to see him. If you get a 10am - 3pm appt you will most likely wait a while for your turn. Check out more info at www.uroasap.com

Good luck!

Hi @lostinfl, I think you need a urologist with more than just an iota of empathy! If you call to make an appointment don't be shy about telling them of the "treatment" you received from the last one and try to get assurance that the people there are humane and will value you as a patient. After all you are paying them to provide you with service and they have to earn their salary from you! I hope you find someone soon and please keep us posted!

I stress Mayos because the are used to seeing cases from other doctors. Theyve seen all the bad stuff. If you individual doctor hop, thrn you can bet you are going in with a reputation already. They figure you are either a pain, difficult, noncompliant etc. You arent any of those, are you?
At Mayos you will prbly talk, be examined, tested by 3+ doctors

I know there is a Mayo Clinic and an entire hospital in Jacksonville which is catty-corner across the state from the Lee and Charlotte County areas. But I have no idea if the Mayo is in SW Florida or if there are plans to have one there. But for the price of a few hours' driving on the interstates, Mayo is definitely an option!

@Doug I am non of those things! Most of my care team would give me a glowing review. Especially my Ortho surgeon. I listen, work hard, and always try to push through with a positive attitude. I am an advocate for myself as I have no family, so try to have as much info as possible. I am always polite to staff! Always! The Mayo in Jacksonville is not an option for me right now. I know one of the hospitals in Tampa has joined with the Mayo.

That may be your ticket. Im assuming you do your legwork or you wouldn't be on here. Howevrr I wouldn't go with guns blazing about how the other doctirs did this or that. I wouldn't trust the staff to hand pick you one.
We just got a good reference on a PCP for my 93 yr old mom, and they just dont aant to invest time in their patients anymore.
A good solid reference is good, not 100%, but good. I think someone on here has offered up one, then there is also Tampa. These satellite facilities like that are quite good.

Well,@lostinfl, if there's hospital in Tampa that joined up with the Mayo then I would definitely look into that, if I were you! Don't have any idea which hospital that is, but it would be quite a bit closer than Jacksonville.
