Prescription for Diapers

Has anyone besides me ever gotten a prescription for diapers from their doctor. I got a prescription last year in order to try to get my diapers covered under insurance but it did not work. My insurance denied my claim even with my prescription, letter from my doctor and my letter in fact begging to help me offset the cost of my diapers by at least covering a portion of them. They stated since it was a disposable product and I don't have Medicare or Medicaid, that couldn't approve my claim to cover any cost of my diapers.

Yes I have a prescription. Medicare doesn't cover diapers btw. I have both medicare and Medicaid. My Medicaid will cover 88 cents per diaper. I get abena l4s and pay about 20 bucks per case and usually get 3 or 4 cases depending on my budget or how much I have in my stash. They also cover wipes (which I don't like the kind they cover so I buy in bulk from Sam's club), chux and lotion. I'm on SSDI and have been for 15 years. I've had medicare throughout that time and the full Medicaid benefits are new this last year. I had qmb before that and they didn't cover squat. I didn't even have dental or vision.

I'm on private insurance and don't qualify for Medicaid so I am at the mercy of the dreaded insurance company. I have heard though, that the diapers Medicaid provides are not that great. Is that true?

The ones that Medicaid fully covers suck. There is no doubt about that. I found a company here in the DC area that will do the billing to Medicaid where I can get them to pay for half of a premium diaper and I just pay the difference. Abena is a great diaper in my opinion and the best I can get for my buck with Medicaid paying half.

My insurance company only covers things like catheters. I’ve fought tooth and nail with them to cover at least some of the cost but the slimes jerks won’t budge.

Here in the UK if you are diagnosed by the urology clinic as medically incontinent and the situation isn't likely to improve you get refered to the NHS Continence Service and ascesed. If they deem you need them you then get a supply from The NHS supply chain. Usually not enough but at least it helps with cost.

I think mine might cover catheters to but I would rather wear diapers than use those. It's a travesty that insurance won't cover products people truly need like diapers. I guess maybe because they are so readily available on stores shelves. Even though the ones on store shelves suck!

At one point in time I was on medical assistance. They covered all the cost for diapers as long as the Dr. wrote out a prescription. I was able to get the Tranquility ATN diapers for quite some time. Then all of a sudden they switched me over to a crappy brand called rely. So, I called to let them know what I thought about there switch of diapers. What a joke. I ended up buying my own diapers then. It was hard at times to even buy them. Why do they have to be so expensive. I finally got better and was able to land a good paying job now. Now it's not so bad. I feel sorry for the people that have to struggle just to make ends meet and then can't get there diapers covered by insurance or at least some part of the cost. I get so frustrated do to the fact that we pay so much for insurance and they cant cover all or at least some of the cost. One thing though, I claim all the diapers I get on my taxes at the end of the year. It helps. It is a medical expense.

I am covered by Medicare/Medicaid too, so my supplies are covered, but it’s true that they aren’t great quality. I finally have a combination of pull-ups with 3 - count ‘em, 3 - boosters meant to go into adult diapers that keep me pretty secure. I can’t afford better quality products.

Here’s the part I love. NYS requires a signature for delivery. Medicare will just mail all kinds of expensive meds, but I have to sign for things to pee on! LOL

It’s a real struggle trying to afford the necessities of life when you have a decent job and insurance!! I feel absolutely horrible for those who can’t afford these things and need to rely on others or the government. I’ve been fortunate to be healthy enough to be able to work hard and have enough money to afford my needs. It is however like you said JWT it is rediculous how expensive these products are and that the insurance companies won’t help out or the government won’t step in and help subsidize the cost.

I was getting tranquility atns through Medicaid but they were not working for me. They definitely were NOT all through the night. I now wonder if I could make them work in a larger size with a booster but honestly I'm tired of trying different things. It would be nice to have the extra 60-80 bucks a month but I've just learned to sacrifice.

My insurance only covers Catheters, it is a joke have them try and conceal a catheter with a bag of pee on your leg and sloshing around. I do get some for the months I can always wear pants, half the time the tubing gets kinked and the pee backs up and the Cath fills up and slips off and pants soaked... or really sucks that insurance does not cover.. when I was 19 and had to go to full time use of diapers instead of just at night, the Drs talked me into a indwelling Cath as a college kid should not have to be in diapers, I ended up with a horrible infection that almost killed me! I was in hospital for three months almost, when I got out and went back to urologist and told him I Will stick with diapers he actually said I would also after going through what you have experienced.

I also had a horrible infection after a Foley catheter. I was on antibiotics for about two months. Here in the UK as Steve said above, we can get some products, but what we get depends on your local health board, there don't seem to be any national guidance. My health authority have a contract with tena so I do get good quality products, but only the cheapest on offer. If I want plastic backed maxi for a busy day away from home I buy them myself as I get textile backed super slips from the NHS. I buy wipes and creams myself. I know someone in a different health authority who gets Lille slips. It ought to be the same everywhere.

I was employed somewhere (20 years ago) that had pretty good medical insurance. I got a prescription from my Dr and was able to get incontentence products threw the mail. Wasnt a large selection and it was from a medical supply company. The brands was what hospitals and care facilities used. I was thankfull mostly because I didnt have to buy them at the store. The price i had to pay even with the insurance was about what I could buy store brand, seems like the shipping costs was the issue. The packages did not come in discreet packaging, usually just a shipping sticker stuck on the product bag.

Thankfully my diapers (Confidry 24/7s), gloves, boosters, barrier ointment, washable reusable bed pads and OAB meds are all currently covered by the VA. They do not cover wipes or diaper covers (PUL or plastic pants) but easy enough to cover those on my own.

For any veterans out there covered by the VA and needing better quality products, there is a process that makes it possible to get them even if they are not on formulary! Takes patience and persistence but I’m proof it can happen.
