Post prospectomy erection Blues

I'm 14 months post prospectomy and still cannot get an erection I take 10 mg of Cialis daily. My urologist said to be patient that it can take up to two years sometimes if at all.. I was just wanting to hear some other experiences to maybe give me some hope about this situation.. I remember reading a year ago on this forum a guy that said did he had a surprise erection one morning out of the blue and it had been about 2 years since his prostatectomy.. I'm just curious what others are experiencing because I really don't find the prosthetic or injections attractive, at least not yet I'm 68 years old. Thanks for any guidance

I'm 60 and 14 months post RP. No erections like you. And my urologist also says could be up to two years. I'm thinking about the injections though, if it comes to that (no pun intended).

I had ED long before my prostatectomy so I was familiar with various remedies beforehand. I am an advocate for injections. I use Trimix with great success. What I lack in spontaneity I gain in quality. Some men are reluctant to do the injecting. I was reluctant to be impotent.

donegatf, that's my thought exactly. If it works, I can take the lack of spontaneity. How long does an injection typically last? I think my doc said 30 minutes or so.

I am 64 and 13 months post RP. I’ve been on 5mg cialis daily and have had no luck with erection with one exception. About a week ago I awoke with about a half erect penis. I was surprised and happy thinking maybe the nerves were healing. It was not enough for penetration but secondary to the loss of length due to the surgery I felt like an old friend had stopped by. Anyway I have not had any further luck. I’m unable to try to stimulate myself as I’m recovering from AUS surgery but until the incontinence is resolved I’m not planning on sexual activity anyway. I will definitely try injection if a larger dose of viagra or cialis does not do the job.

I am 66 and one year past a radical prostratectomy. I have no natural erection and cialis does not work. Three months after my prostrate removal, and once I was no longer incontinent, I started rehabilitation therapy with a vacuum pump. I did this daily for 6/7 weeks which is a little longer than it is supposed to take. I had a lot of support from the company that sold me the vacuum pump and my surgeon had always said that he expected me to be able to have a sex life when I had recovered. I was advised not to delay starting rehabilitation with the vacuum pump. I really enjoy my sex life with the vacuum pump as it has proved a reliable technique, you can adjust your erection if you need to, and it is drug free so pleasanter than cialis in that sense. There are risks with injections.

I am so pleased with the outcome I have had.

I did have ED for a long time and I did not do snything for it. Long story but the thing is no matter what the reason if your erections stop it effects your penis health. ED causes size loss. https://augustams.com/how-to-use-a-penis-pump-for-penis-exercise/ That is a great read and is for men who have RP but is the same for anyone with ED. Just wanted to add this as that exercise can not only prevent or slow down size loss it can also in some cases restore some size loss. You can also use this for sex but it is limited a bit in the number of time a week and the length of time the constriction ring is left in place. Talk to your doctor about this. A normal healthy man has a number of erections every day to provide for penis health. These even start before birth. If these stop that is when loss starts to happen. It can be a lot of work to do this every day. When I did this there were days I did not have time to do VED exercise. I would instead do some gentle stretching. I would place my index and middle finger below and thumb above my penis at the base of the head (glans) of my penis. Then gently pull straight out away from my body for a second or 2 then back to my body. Then repeat up. down, right and then left. I had good luck with VED therapy and stretching to help restore some of the size loss caused by my untreated ED.

As far as injections I have no personal experience with but I have read that some men had really good luck with them. They by trial and error found the amount of medication to inject for different lengths of time. 30 minutes or one hour or however long they wanted. Of course you have to be very careful to stay under 2 hours. Priapism is a serious and painful thing that can cause really bad damage. And can be caused with oral meds or injection. There are some videos online of men being treated in the ER for this and I would encourage any one who is using meds or injections to watch a few to understand fully the need to be careful. This is a really difficult thing for us men to go through but there is help. There are sites for men with ED to get a lot of information on treatments and support from men with the same issues.

If anyone would like more information please send me a Private message.

Had problems after surgery 10 years ago, but now fine without meds not as stiff as I like, but on a high note everything seems more intense and longer at the finish.

@fuzzykiwi48 my erections last more than 30 minutes but have tailed off to a great extent by the one hour mark. I’ve never lasted anywhere close to that 4 hour warning time period. I don’t have sex very often anymore so scarring and Peyronies isn’t a worry. I relate to the writer who said an erection is like having an old friend stop by. It brings back great memories.

I appreciated your information but I'm curious as to the size being correlated with an erection.. I don't care how big I am as long as I can get an erection.. and if you don't mind posting a link on the Ed site that you recommended. Thanks

57 years old and about 11 months post RP. No erections yet but have been using pump with some success. Have woke to a few very mild erections at night. Not sure if anyone else has this but sometimes when I sit on the toilet I notice my penis becomes slightly engorged. I’m hoping this is a good sign but not sure. I had some ED pre surgery that was fixed with viagra. If no improvement in next few months I may try injections.

@rd0077 The nocturnal erection are the bodies way of keeping the tissue healthy. Without them the tissue atrophies. Same as with muscle. If there is nerve injury and a muscle will not work until the nerve heals the muscle will begin to fade away and shrink. Direct current (DC electricity) can be used to shock the muscle to help slow this down until the nerve heals. The VED therapy is like DC treatment for a muscle. It helps to keep the tissue from shrinking. The article I linked does a good job explaining it. This is a site that has a lot of good information. https://www.franktalk.org/ It is for men and has been split up into sections. VED, injections, General,......ect. There is a thread in the General Discussion section titled Documents Worth Reading. That has the link to the article I posted and a lot of other really good information. If you have time to do some reading you may find it worth while. There are other sites out there if you want to do a search for them.

I'm 24 months post RP. Taking Cialis since surgery with minimal positive response. Had sling surgery 4 months ago with good success. I too was told that it may take over 1 yr for erections to come back. Has not happened so scheduled to start injections in a few months. Thanks for the websites to read up on injections and the pump.

I use the Vacuum Pump and I like it. It's nice to see things back the way the used to be and it makes masturbation easier. And I can get a pleasant enough orgasm, though a different experience than previously. Unfortunately my wife had a prolapse and now after about a year and a half has had a repair and a hysterectomy. I am so thankful she is recovering well and while some sexual intimacy would be nice I am learning to be thankful for friendship, love and intimacy I'm other ways. Some women find sex painful after a hysterectomy apparently so who knows what will happen in 6/8 weeks time.

I am 68 and actually more concerned with the ongoing leakage that had improved a lot but seems to have plateaued. I'm due to have my six monthly contact with the urology specialist nurse in the January and we might be discussing further intervention at that stage if I don't see any improvement.

So you had an RP or just e d? I'm curious about the pump and how they are used, do you do it daily for the overall health of the penis or just as needed for gratification? One of the posters here led me to believe that it needed to be done like regular exercise for the function and use of the penis because of atropy?? Anyway I'm learning is I go and I see my urologist next week with a many questions. I'm 14 months post RP and no erections. Thank you for sharing

Hi rd0077

I had radical prostatectomy one year 5 months ago. I use the pump for both purposes you mention, I use the Vacurect pump . It can be used just for exercise and preventing atrophy and with the use of a constriction ring for maintaining an erection if desired. You are not meant to keep the ring in position for more than 30 minutes. There are a number of YouTube videos illustrating the use of the pump. Vacurect also send a dvd with the pump to demonstrate usage and a variety of rings of different diameters

By the way I have read that erections can take up to three years to return and a lot is dependent on nerve sparing. I was nerve sparing on one side. Obviously, nerve sparing on both sides would be better and with nerves removed on both sides I think it is unlikely that erections can be achieved without support in some manner
