Post-OP PAIN...but like 3 weeks to a month LATER!!

I was about to ask earlier today if anyone had any abdominal pain post-op. Not right away, as I recovered from the actual surgery, pain-wise, pretty quickly, within 24 hrs, pretty much. This was 3-4 weeks post-op (now). Today is exactly 1 month post-op!

However, my wife texted me that she set up a Dr. appt. for me today at 2 pm. My Dr/surgeon is out-of-town, so the appt. was with a nurse practitioner. She listened to me and then we decided on a sonogram - they ruled out kidney stones, but definitely saw something...just didn't know WHAT!

Next, they sent me off for a CT scan.

Then, without explanation, they sent me by wheelchair to the ER!
That scaredus (my wife and I) - figured emergency exploratory surgery to stop the bleeding or whatever...which was kinda shocking, because other than some pain, severe at times (and I have a high threshold for it), I felt OK - not nauseous, no fever, etc...

Once in ER, was finally told the CT scan showed a hematoma (internal pool of blood) in the area near my kidneys, but between them and my stomach. They did not original do a contrast CT scan, so they couldn't tell if still bleeding or old blood from 7-10 days ago when this all started. They could have ordered a contrast CT scan, but since all my vitals and labs from blood work good, they decided not necessary and believe old internal bleeding that will clear up (body will absorb it, eventually) on its own, so I got discharged w/ pain meds and got to come home...more labs Monday to confirm still good w/ lots of rest for a while.

So, knew what it was, but still not what caused it... Could have something to do with surgery or something completely isolated and independent - don't think I will ever know...

Anyhow, was just wondering if anyone could relate. If totally unrelated to the surgery, then probably not common and just my bad luck! HA!

Feel free to to share any like or similar experiences...thought I had enough to deal with...just add another to the list: hematoma! nice!

Oh well...gotta deal with whatever comes at you! No choice!!! It will be fine - in a while!

+God+bless+, everyone!

Oh my gosh, how horrifying! I can’t believe they didn’t immediately do a CT with contrast!!!! Please keep us posted!

Sorry to hear about your hematoma. It does sounds painful. I’m glad you went to have it checked and they found the problem. The action taken in ER sounds funny, but they are the experts. If you are still not comfortable with their diagnosis get a second opinion. I pray all goes well and your recovery is quick. Remember we are all here with you on your journey through life. Keep us informed and keep the faith. It sounds like you have a great support system. Your wife sounds like a real angle. Thank her for me for being their and all she has to go through for you. We love you both!

Glad you got it checked out and they were able to find the problem. I pray when you follow up it will be all gone. Hang in there brother, we’re all here to support you.

@snow - Hanging in there!

I feel a little better, as doing less, but otherwise about the same. When I am active at all, the pain is back, but I did get more pain pills - only take when active and really need them.

They say it may take months for the body to absorb all the blood from the hematoma and said I will hurt some until it does! I go for another CT scan Thursday, 10/20 (tomorrow) so they can compare to the original and make sure hematoma not getting any larger! Said too soon to expect it to be much smaller, but if not larger then not actively bleeding.

So...I am following Dr orders...lots of bed rest. I do work from home. Dr said OK to drive and go to functions (still coaching my son's football team!) but I just can't do much but stand there and 'coach' the boys (run my mouth, which I am good at!!! LOL!!!) We had practice last night, game tonight, then playoff game and Championship game (if we win) next week and then on to basketball season! LOL!!!

Thanks for checking on me - that is so sweet of you!

Hope you are doing well!

Take care & +God+bless+
