Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, or PTNS, is a newer treatment for those dealing with overactive bladder symptoms, and many patients are having great success with this procedure.

This treatment is done in our office in Bloomer and is virtually pain-free. PTNS is designed to stimulate the nerves responsible for bladder control using the tibial nerve in your lower leg.

During treatment, a small, slim needle electrode is inserted near your tibial nerve and connected to a battery-powered stimulator. The impulses travel to the tibial nerve and then to the sacral nerve, which controls bladder function.

Each treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes, and you would typically receive 12 treatments one week apart. After the first 12 weeks, your provider will evaluate your response to treatment and determine if additional treatments are necessary.

I had it. It helped some, but not enough that I continued after the initial treatment, opting instead to go with Botox and Interstim.

The good part is that it's quick, minimally invasive, and painless. Some people swear by it.

For me, I’ve tried medications, Interstim, Bladder Botox injections and I’m on the 5th or 6th treatment of PTNS and none of this stuff has worked.

I tried PTNS. It’s not all that new. Depends on the person assigned to insert the needle whether it works or not. Out of all the nurses that did this procedure on me, only one seemed to get the location right. Even though it was quite a bit further drive to be able to access this particular nurse, it was worth it. Unfortunately, insurance only covers a certain number of these.

I tried PTNS 5 years ago , so its not new. What a joke, it did nothing at all. I was so hopeful thaty it might work. I was told the only thing that works for some people is eercisews and younare doing them 3 times a day for about 45 mins.I found ot , theres not enough Drs that know much about incontinence, so your better off just wearing the right pretection. Good luck , I have not found much that helps. colin 13
