Not sure if I should see a doctor yet

Good day everyone!

This is my first post here. Last night, I dreamt that I was urinating, and started to urinate in my sleep. The first time this happened to me was either in late high school or early college years. It's happened a handful of other times.

At first I thought stress triggered it. A month ago when it happened, my mother-in-law was going in for serious surgery. My aunt is currently in the hospital, not doing very well at all, and it happened to me last night.

I always dream that I am urinating, and it basically wakes me up. Some days I'm drenched, and others not drenched, but enough to wash everything.

I've always had a cup of tea after dinner and at least one glass of water, so I didn't think that was the cause. I have noticed the past year or so that I urinate more frequently, and sometimes I'm afraid I can't hold it. I'm 40 years old, in good health, but do suffer from MDD. I've been on antidepressants for 10 years.

I wasn't sure if I should see a doctor yet or start a bladder journal first. Luckily, these episodes are very few and far between, with the exception of last night and about a month ago.

Any advice would help.

Thank you all!

It’s probably good to see a doctor just to make sure all the bad stuff like diabetes isn’t present but also maybe look into counseling or therapy for stress management.

I wouldn’t be too worried. I’d say keep a bladder diary and if it becomes more frequent or if the daytime issues worsen then see the doctor.

It may also be a good idea to invest in a mattress protector.

100% agree with justej. However I would say you should immediately get a mattress protector. If you don’t have anymore accidents great but if you do your mattress is protected.

I would also say the idea of a bladder diary is great since it will show if there is a pattern involved and you may want to also record what your eating on the night prior.

Honestly you could just be super stressed given all that is going on around you.

I hope it gets much better for you!!

My oab and urge incontinence started with sporadic bedwetting. First handful of times i rationalized it away and wasnt at all concerned enough to see a doctor. But then it quickly ramped up to a few nights a week and then almost nightly...thats when i called for a urology appointment. It took almost a month to be seen so in the meantime i bought diaper to wear to bed. Never got out of them lol and now wear 24/7.

Adult onset nocturnal enuresis can be stress related but it isually linked to some underlying medical issue. Best to at least get the major ones ruled out. I was worried i had bladder cancer or some degenerative neurological disorder....OAB coming back as the cause was by comparison not a big deal. Unfortunately none of the treatments worked for me and im left with managing it but life goes on.

Id say give it another week or 2 and if it keeps happenening then go ahead and call the doc. For most people IC is highly treatable or curable. No semse in putting it off.
