I am a 77 year old male who has been struggling with Nocturia for over 5 years. I have been diagnosed with BPH for at least 4 of those years. I have had 3 procedures with urology specialists: Greenlight microwave surgery, Urolift, and recently, TURP surgery.
I get up way too many times each night. I stop drinking liquids other than taking meds with a swallow or two at 6 p.m. and yet I consistently urinate about 32 oz. (quart) each night @ 4 or more ounces each time. I go to bed at 11 pm and get up at 6:30 am and see almost every hour on the clock when I go pee. I am still visiting my urologist and hoping for a good solution that lets me have a good night's sleep.

Hi Meatball,

I am a 71 year old man with a similar problem. I was going about every 30 minutes during the night; and during the day about every 60 minutes. I also had urgency and painful urination.

I have had a urodynamics test. (That is where they pump your bladder up until you tell them to stop. AWFUL!)

Also, 5 cystoscopy/dilation procedures. (A scope is inserted into the bladder to look for cancer, etc., but also can open up the urethra to make for a better stream.) I also take a drug called Tamsulosin that helps with the painful urination.

Finally, I had the Medtronic Interstim implanted device. I call it a "pacemaker for my bladder." What a blessing it has been!:D A small transmitter/receiver is implanted under the skin somewhere; I chose to have it implanted on the right side of my back just above the belt line. Wires from that device are directed under the skin to near the sacral nerve, near the bladder. Somehow this device interacts with the nerve in such a way that I can now last as long as 3 hours. What an improvement! I can control the device with a wireless remote device that I hold in my hand. The implant can contain 4 programs at a time that I can select at will (99 programs are available, but must be loaded by the doctor or sales rep from Medtronic.) I can also change the amplitude of the channels at will. Not every urologist can do this, so ask your urologist for a referral.

May God bless all of us who suffer!
