Losing patience with short term disability.

Still waiting for an answer from short term disability. They combined the old claim form May with this one and now I'm back in limbo. It has been three months dealing with this. I am broke financially and I am broke emotionally. I didn't make it to work last night due to this crap and I have to have enough money to pay bills this month because my parents left and are in Florida for two weeks. I am going to call the short term clam office again this morning and see what the hold up is now..so done with all of this I just need answers as to what is going to be my next move.

Hi FLGuy, I hope you were able to make headway when you called the short term claims office today and were able to at least find out something. I don't know what you'd think about this but awhile ago several of us here made suggestions you contact a lawyer. It sounds like there may be some back pay that you are owed and a lawyer could help you claim what you are owed. Or maybe there's some kind of a legal aid office near where you live. They get situations like yours all the time. And such an office can make recommendations accordingly. All of these paperwork hold-ups you've told us about are costing you dearly and you don't deserve that type of treatment!! You need to recover that money that is owed to you. So please consider a lawyer. If it were me I would at least try to have a consultation to see what, if anything, can be done. I think some lawyers do offer a free first consultation and some may not charge a fee unless you win. It would be worth it to find out what your legal options are. I would think that after all of this run-around a good lawyer would quickly see your side and would try every legal means to help. When you see the lawyer bring all of the paperwork you have which would help your case. Good luck and please think about this.

I agree: a lawyer is the best way to go. Most disability attorneys don’t charge you unless you win, then they take a percentage of what you win. That percentage is capped by law. And disability takes a really long time to get; don’t expect any quick results. Permanent disability takes 3-5 years to receive.

ThatFLGuy: I've lost track, Is that Social Security disability you are dealing with?
There are lawyers who seem to make their entire living dealing with disability.
The other thing I've lost track of. I had an employer who provided disability (we paid extra), and they were very eager to fight Soc Sec, because once social security kicked in, the private insurance paid less. So eager, they handed out pamphlets on how to go about it! I don't have any of those left. Who knew I could distribute them all these years later.
If you are in that situation, check it out.

So my short term disability claim was approved so now I am just waiting for payment. The short term disability is through work with a company called Unum. They ended up back dating my claim tell may which means that I will be able to get paid for every day that I missed work. The only thing is that I have to go back to the doctor next week as the claim covers 5/8-8/27 only as that is the last GP visit. But all in all the right direction. Also I will know on the 17th what the theropy will or will not be able to do. Now that the claim is approved it will be easier to get ssd if I have to go that way.

Hi FLGuy, Sounds like progress!!!:D And now just keep after them until you get what your are owed. I hope you are feeling more optimistic about things in general now and are still keeping a "paper trail" so if there are further questions that may be taken care of.
we'll keep continued good thoughts and best wishes for you!
