Intermittent wetting

I am new to this. But wondering if others have the same problem. I am a T1 diabetic and don’t feel my bladder until it has about 1.5 liters. I catheterize but sometimes have spasms that cause light to heavy leaks. I can go a month or even 2 with no major issues. Same thing at night. But once I have an accident, especially at night it last for the next week to three weeks with accidents every night to every other night. I wear some kinds of nighttime diapers until dry for 5 days and then start the cycle all over again. I can’t stand the whole thing. Does anyone else have a similar situation and do you just wait for a wet bed to wear the protection or wear every night just Incase? I am perplexed.

Hi Kiki and welcome!! When my UI started I was having similar issues with infrequent accidents and had no idea when or where it would happen and after about a year of this happening and after many Dr appointments I resigned to wearing diapers. It wasn’t an easy choice but looking back at that time of my life I wish I would have made that decision from the start. This isn’t a death sentence it’s just a twist in the road and it allows us to keep our lifestyle with dry pants(lol)!! Do your research and find what works best for you to manage your incontinence and find a Dr you trust that can help you find the reasons for this. Like I said this isn’t the end of life as you know it it’s just a twist in the road and you must be your own advocate for your health, I’m sure you will find your path but stay in touch with us here as there are many of us who have been down this path and are more than willing to help!!

Thanks to both who responded. Two questions:what do you mean by “plastic pants?” And as a man, I am not finding a product that doesn’t leak if things move around and get pointed to the side or something. Any thoughts? Sorry if too Blundt.

@Koli The plastic pants also known as PUL pants are a cover to go over a diaper to contain any leaks. Gary Wear makes a good one.

There are many products out there for men, but you do have to look a little harder. Women are the larger market in this area and a lot of what you see will be aimed at them. As @Petejc said experiment with different things (many free and inexpensive samples are available) and find what works best for you. Also bed pads and chux can be helpful.

The plastic pants are an over pant style brief that helps hold any leaks in that may happen with an accident while wearing pretection or not. You can find these on many different incontinence product sites. However if you want a good brief that you can trust try looking at either the Tena slip maxi active fit or look into products from Northshore. I personally can’t wear the over pant as it is far too warm for me and causes me to sweat and therefore causes rashes. So just be careful and try multiple products, I use confidry 24/7’s at night and recently switched to Northshore supreme lites with an added booster for daytime use.

It also helps to make sure 'things' are properly inside the leak guard. I find that sometimes the leak guard needs to be pulled away from the padding as they can stick together. When putting the slip on I try to get the edges right up into the crease at the top of my leg and tape it on tightly. You will get the hang of it in a short while, cheers, Phil

I started out that way but the wetting became such a pain just stayed in diapers to accidents under control.The reason for mine is being a diabetic.

@Koli

Bladders are inhabited by devious, evil little gremlins. Misleading 'dry spells' set us up for those sudden flood events that can break an epic drought at anytime -- day or night. Whoops! Suprise!!!

In fact, my bladder often resembles a 'savanna*' type of climate.

Eventually the solution comes around to being prepared and being protected, 24/7 for some of us.

It is what it is....

That is kinda funny and truthfully how I feel. I do find that when I retain water because of the dry times that the flood is not far away. I am in good shape, work out, diagnosed T1 5 years ago. And truly that is when it all started because they figure I had it for at least 2 years but adult onset takes longer than Juvenial T1 to diagnose. I don’t know that I can handle diapers every night. I have been married 29 years to a wonderful supportive woman. It is me that is struggling the most.

Koli, we all struggle, at least until we find what works for us. Unfortunately, mine seems to change with some regularity, so my solutions do also.
