Incontinence

I had surgery for prostate removal on February 25th. I am doing the Koegel exercises as instructed. I am not seeing any improvement in leakage of urine. Is this normal after 2 months post surgery?

You may experience leakage for several months depending on how well everything heals up. Too leakage is a very broad term. I still have some leakage and my surgery was the first week of December. The doctor still thinks I am doing remarkably well.

So the real questions are how often, how much, and under what circumstances?

December 2nd for me. 2 months in I was pretty discouraged as well. I do much better now unless I am physically working hard. Even at that I am still seeing improvement. You have come to the right place for straight answers and encouragement.

I also had my prostate removed on 25th February and it wasn’t until this last weekend that I noticed a slight improvement I still really struggle with physical exercise but am hopeful that things will now improve more.
I wish you luck and hope that things improve soon

Wow. What a coincidence. We both had surgery on the same day. This forum is a godsend. I talked to my best friend but all he could do is google my concern and give me a generic response

When I went for my four week appointment I was very discouraged. The NP I saw told me I would feel differently in a few more weeks. She was correct. It takes time and keep doing your exercises.

My RP was March 8 and I am almost completely dry all night. I’m not seeing any real progress during the day. If it wasn’t for the postings in this forum I’d be depressed on my lack of recovery and progress.

What you start to understand is that each of us recover differently. Your body’s ability to heal from the surgery is one factor. Your attention to Kegel and pelvic floor exercises is another factor. This second factor can help your body but it can’t displace the body’s own healing process which just takes time.

Please do share what you think is working for you with the rest of us. We in turn will share our own milestones with you.

Hey Ozzie: I am 74 and had RP surgery on 7-6-20. I leaked like an open pipe for several months then things started to get better each day. You should see pretty dramatic improvement at about 5/6 months. See if you can find a PT type that knows about RP surgery and recovery. Learn how to properly do your kegel exercises. Learn how to engage your pelvic floor muscles prior to standing or lifting or farting. You will be fine even though now you're probably wondering if you might be the guy that doesn't fully recover. Those cases are rare! When you learn how to engage your pelvic floor muscles so you can fart and not pee you will be on your way!!! Keep on keepin on! Rayl in Arizona

Hi,Teddy here,I had my operation on 28th.October 2020,I was going through 6 heavy duty diapers a day then 2 months later I'm now down to 2 mini pads a day but mostly only one a day. Dont'do too much Kegel exercises, not more than 60 a day,too much your pelvic floor muscle will get too lazy. Also if you are a smoker stop it,and coke pepsi etc... orange juice is ok but take it with half water. Too much liquide that is acid will effect your pelvic floor muscle, and hard liquor stop it for at least 3 months.Don't forget we all had a hell of an operation, and like my wife tells me our body may be healed on the outside but the inside takes TIME.Don't get discourged, you just have to discipline yourself.Take care

Thank you so much for your help Ray. My urologist told me that in addition to the Koegel exercises I can strengthen the muscles by trying to stop peeing once I started. For some reason I was able to do that quite easily. Hopefully that is a good sign

Hi All:

My name is Nick, I am 74 years old and 4 weeks ago had my prostate removed at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. I had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. My surgeon believes he got all the cancer but of course a PSA test will hopefully prove him correct when I take the test in several months.

I opted for surgery rather than radiation/hormone shots because I have what is called a J-Pouch. After living in Pakistan for almost a year a parasite gained access to my colon area. After I got back to the States, and 5 different antibiotics, the parasite was gone but the antibiotics/parasites badly damaged my colon, so badly the colon had to be removed. So the colorectal surgeons at Johns Hopkins removed the colon and attached my small intestine to my rectum, forming a J-Pouch.

Because of my J-Pouch my prostate surgeon did not do robotic surgery but cut open my belly below my belly button and removed my prostate. The post operation biopsy indicated that the prostate had an aggressive cancer, however, and happily, the lymph nodes were clear.

My recovery appears to be going well; urine stream is good, and clear. Not that much pain and I have been doing some exercise(swimming/walking)each day.

My major concern is the urinary incontinence. I am fine at night; lying down with very little urinary output. However during the day the leakage is a major concern, especially while I am active. I probably use 3-4 small pads during the day.

I was doing Kegel exercise before the operation, stopped for a few weeks since the operation and have now had my first meeting with a pelvic floor specialist last week. I have now restarted the Kegel exercises (about one week).

I am hopeful however any thoughts from members of the forum would be appreciated.

All the Best to Everyone,

Nick

Been 8 months since they removed my prostate.62 years old. Mostly at 1 pad per day, but occasionally go an entire day without one. Mostly stress leakage. Walk over 3 fast paced miles a day and that has really helped. Have forgotten about kegels, but with walking and other strength exercises I figured I was doing enough. Now if the ED would get better that would be outstanding! Not going to complain though as psa has been undetectable. Hang in there and be patient. Like others have said, we all heal at a different pace especially after major surgery.

Nick,

I've been a member of this forum for nearly a year and read many reports on how people are recovering from prostatectomy. I have nothing short of admiration for your recovery. Considering the major issues you had to overcome and are now swimming after 4 weeks from major surgery and down to 3-4 small pads is truly remarkable.

Others may have helpful suggestions, as for me, I'll stand in awe.

Thank you both (Sonorarider and Greensleeves 351)for your thoughts. I continue to be optimistic about overcoming the incontinence and next figuring out how I will overcome erectile dysfunction (ED); however at my age overcoming ED may not matter😂

Ozzievargas,

Well I guess by now you can see there are folks on here of different ages that are sympathetic to your concerns. Ask questions, someone on here will respond. That’s the great thing about this forum. Most everyone offers words of encouragement and no one will try to make you feel bad about your progress.

I am 64. Had RP Jan 28 2021. Aggressive tumor, wide margins, lots to heal. Was doing kegels snd walking, but leaking night and day. Encouraged by reading this board last two months. Realized I did not have good kegel technique, and improved my muscle isolation. Seeing slow improvement this last week. Today, at 3 months PS, almost dry over night, less than one ounce of fluid in pull up! Best since catheter came out. Hard to be patient with something that is such a full time aggravation. Realize there will be set backs. Am blessed on cancer side by negative margins, negative lymph nodes and 6 wk PSA at 0.0. Will have PSA done monthly. Hoping for more improvement in leakage, especially daytime. Not hiding out in meantime. Pull ups and pads and just keep going!
