Hi. Um I’m new to this site and I’m new to having incontinence. I have urinary incontinence. I’m a young adult. I absolutely dislike the feel of wearing a diaper especially in public. If anyone has any tips about getting used to this life please let me know. Thanks.

Hi, acceptance starts with understanding the cause of your incontinence. Diapers are only an aid that helps you get through the day, just like crutches for someone with walking impairment. To improve your mobility with using crutches you have to understand your body, muscles and bones. The same applies to incontinence and diapers. There are many reasons why incontinence can happen but there is not one reason to be ashamed off. My tip is, talk to your doctor and take every opportunity he gives you to improve your situation. Ask your continence nurse for diapers or pads that help you get through the day as normal as possible without having to worry about leaks or when or how to change, while you still can do the things you need or want to do. In my experience shame is only caused by how i look at myself, and not how others see me.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I can assure you the more you wear, which from what I hear you saying is constantly, you will be surprised how you’ll adapt. I’ve been in diapers forever and really don’t even think about it. I do know pretty well however when the wetting capacity of my diaper is at its max. I do push that limit since the cost of diapers just goes up, like everything and I try and get the best use out of each diaper.
