Diapers before and after colonoscopy

I was just wondering about wearing diapers before and after a colonoscopy. If you tell them you need diapers, will they put a diaper or pad on you after the procedure is done. My dr. knows I wear diapers for urinary and light bowel. I will bring my own diapers if they don't put one on me after the procedure. I'll just tell them I need it for urinary issues since I will be pretty well cleaned out bowel wise. Anyone have suggestions on what to do during prep or day of procedure.

I just watched TV during prep except for fairly frequent restroom visits. I didn't have any fluids for the 3 hours leading up to the procedure so I my leakage was light enough not noticeable. Not sure that helps.

Let the doctors office know your issues, and ask them for their advice. I am sure they have seen t8 before.

I get colonoscopies every year, so I've had a little experience with the prep.

For me, the worst part is the liquid diet the day before. I hate trying not to feel hungry when all I can have is broth and jello (but not read or purple jello!) If I'm in a good period with my bladder where I'm not wearing diapers anyway, I usually put one on at noon when they want me to take Dulcolax tablets, since those can occasionally hit me pretty fast and hard.

Usually the main part of the prep starts at 5. I've done most of the available preps out there, but the most common one that doctors seem to use these days is Miralax and Gatorade. That's an easy one - a glass every ten minutes until I've had the required amount. With a Golytely or Nulytely prep, it's the same drill, but the stuff tastes kind of salty, and I rinse my mouth IMMEDIATELY after swaying the prep using a second glass with tap water. I sweetish it around in my mouth and spot it out, then repeat. That helps keep me from gagging on the liquid later in the prep, and it makes all the difference in the world. I actually prefer the Golytely prep, and my doctor claims it's more likely to do a good job.

It usually takes an hour before the Dulcolax from earlier and the liquid prep start kicking in, so I'll sit and read a book, but you want to be close to the bathroom during this time!

Before the first BM occurs, I coat my anus and the surrounding area with Vaseline. That keeps the stool coming out from being in contact with my skin, making cleanup easier and ensuring that I don't end up with a sore bottom.

If it's a split prep (which seems to be the trend - the last two times I've had a colonoscopy, they've requested a split prep) I only drink half the solution, and save the rest for the next morning. They'll give you instructions on what time to start the second half.

Split prep or no, I usually have some anal leakage overnight, so I'll wear a diaper. I also wear one to the procedure, and take a clean one to wear home. I have pretty significant ulcerative colitis, so I don't know if others have the anal leakage issues I do.

The second worse part of the prep is if I'm still seeing any brown in my bowel movements, they typically want me to use two Fleet enemas a couple of hours before the procedure. Those things are uncomfortable at the best of time, and even with liberal use of Vaseline, my bottom is sore enough that they burn going in and burn coming out. But it doesn't take long, and most times I don't have to use them at all.

The colonoscopy itself is nothing. They've finally learned that I need enough midazolam to tranquilize a horse, so they push plenty of meds, and I wake up in recovery. Get dressed, have my wife drive me home, eat, and nap the rest of the day.

But will doctors allow you to wear your diapers after the procedure? I have urinary incontinence as well so I don't want to have an accident in recovery.

The procedure only takes less than 30 minutes. They make sure you fart before you leave, this ensures your bowels are ok, etc. Ask the doctors office any questions beforehand, they have seen it all.

My wife had one about a year. Across the way from us, a lady came in and stated bluntly, I’m incontinent and have to wear protection. Will you put one on when you are down. The nurse agreed nonchalantly that they would then asked, what she wanted to call them, and did everything they needed to prepare her. Seemed very respectfully handled.

I always wake up with no diaper on, but I'm always on an underpad - it's not uncommon to leak some of the residual prep liquid during recovery, so everyone gets an underpad, as far as I've seen.

As others have said, if you have concerns, bring them up to the nurses there, it call the endoscopy center ahead of time. They deal with incontinence all the time, since it's so prevalent in the people who need colonoscopies, and they will be able to manage it discreetly and professionally.

@mhart82 when I had mine done, they let you go to the toilet after so you could pop one on in the toilets and save your dignity having to explain you need to wear them. It shouldn't be a problem asking though. Good luck and hope all is ok.

I wore one to the appointment and after the procedure.Didn't go to a recovery room the nurse just handed me my diaper and cloths and left the room.

I had my 10 year colonoscopy screening done a few months ago. After the prep, there was NOTHING left in my colon, but I wet everytime I sleep. Knowing this, I wore a disposable diaper to the procedure. While the nurse was prepping me, I told her about my bedwetting issues and that I was wearing a diaper. She said "No problem, we see this often... And it's much more common than you think." For the procedure, they have you laying on your side. So they just un-did the tapes on the right side, folded the diaper back, and did the colonoscopy. When I woke up in recovery a while later, the diaper was re-fastened, and wet.

How did the coloscopy go?

I had my first colonoscopy 2.5 years ago at 45 and it is when the found the cancerous polyps.
The prep (Golightly)sucks but is better mixed with crystal light lemonade. When I arrived I told the nurse I had a diaper on as I am bladder incontinent and she said no worries just to wear it they will have me remove it before I go in the room. Little while later a nurse rolls my gurney out of the first area and straight into the procedure room still diapered. (I have sleep apnea so they knock me out like surgery.)
Once in the room the Drs introduce themselves and are telling me what they are there for, Anesthesiologist, Pulmonologist, and my GI Dr. As they are doing this I am on my left side facing them and a female walks in and stands behind me next to the hose.
I am talking to the Dr saying I understand and she asks me "Are you a C/O?" I ignore her and she asked again "I asked are you a Correctional Officer?" (This is never a good sign)I tell her, yes I am.
She then tells me I thought that was you, I am ******'s wife, Rosey, you were at my wedding. No worse feeling then that moment realizing my friends wife was about to not only see me in a diaper but untape it for the procedure.
I woke up in recovery with no memory of the procedure with the tapes of my diaper torn when they removed it. My wife had a fresh diaper for me in her purse so I changed in the bathroom. Having found cancer, I had to go back every 6 months for follow ups. She is always friendly and professional.

Hi John,
We sure have some humbling moments for sure.
At least she was nice, professional and took good care if you.
Was it just polyps they found and were they able to be removed successfully?

I get those too. Fortunately they have gotten all of them so far each time.

Hope you enjoy the weekend. 🙂

@jrpoorman It was polyps the first time, each time after pre-cancerous polpys. This last time pre-cancerous polyps and nodules.

I wore my diaper into the colonoscopy and endoscopy procedure. When I came out I still had my diaper underwear on but they had ripped the side in order to open it to gain access to me for my colonoscopy. When they said I could get dressed, I asked for a diaper to replace my ripped one. They handed me a brief style diaper and I put it on myself before I got dressed to leave.

That seems to be standard procedure, just rip open the side of the diaper. I even made sure to wear a velcro-style disposable diaper to my colonoscopy, figuring it would be easier for them to un-do it. Nope, when I woke up afterwards, my diaper was hanging on by 1 tab, they ripped the other one off when they opened it. But I was still glad I wore it, since I was quite wet when I woke up.
