Diapers are failing me

I'm having what's called a Mini-TURP scheduled in July. This will solve my retention and frequency issues hopefully but I really doubt it will solve my IC. I am using NorthShore Go Supreme at night and Depends Night Defense during the day. I probably have posted that as long as I walk around I don't leak much. But sitting at sofa or desk in front of my computer or while sleeping the urine just comes out in a steady stream. Even getting up to use bathroom while watching TV doesn't stop what seems to be a continuous flow. Urine always ends up around the edges of my leg and my butt as flow spreads. What am I supposed to do. Use a new diaper every 2-3 hours while watching TV. They cost a fortune. Don't want to use a tabs diaper. I like the pull-up. When I come home for day I usually have to change out of the Depends after a few hours of sitting. I then put on the NorthShore. But putting on the NorthShore hours before I go to bed fills a lot of the capacity so urine is already leaking out of the sides before I awake. I estimated between protective bed pads and diapers I have already spent $470 this year. Now if I have to buy extra diapers for the evening my outlay will be $1200-$1300 a year. I know there are larger capacity diapers but weight of the liquid absorbed really pulls down the diaper. I am overweight and don't have much of a waist. Who makes the largest capacity pull up. At least it will be better than the situation I am in right now.

Honestly i have never had pull ups work for me. I’ve heard abena and Northshore are the best and store bought brands are crappy.

It sounds like you’re doing your best to manage a really frustrating situation, and you’re right — sitting or lying down often causes leaks to pool and escape around the legs. A few things that might help:

  • Try boosters or inserts: Adding a booster pad inside your pull-up can increase capacity without needing a full change every few hours. Once the booster is saturated, you can just replace that instead of the entire product.
  • Consider sizing and fit: Since you mentioned not having much of a waist, sometimes a slightly higher-rise pull-up or one with stronger leg gathers can reduce side leakage when sitting.
  • Mixing products: Some people use a lighter pull-up earlier in the evening, then switch to their higher-capacity option closer to bedtime so it’s fresher and not partly used when they finally go to sleep.
  • Protective pads on chairs/sofas: This reduces stress about accidents and might cut down on how often you feel you must change.

As for high-capacity pull-ups, a few brands do make options that hold more than the standard ones. If you’re open to trying different products, San Pablo Commercial (SPC) Incontinence Products include heavy-absorbency pull-ups and SPC Super Absorbent Liners that are designed for overnight or extended wear. Many people also find the SPC Quilted Underpads useful for extra peace of mind when sitting or resting.

Hello Mike,

So if I had the problem that it runs permanently, I would consider whether to use a condom catheter. I had tried this for a while - but was not so happy with the system for various reasons. However, I am lucky that my bladder does not constantly empty itself. With me, there can sometimes be four or five hours in between before it happens, so that I don't sit in the wet all the time.

However, I think you should talk to your doctor about it again. If the incontinence is caused by a sphincter weakness, there is also the possibility to solve the problem surgically with an artificial sphincter. In many cases, this can restore complete continence.

I have worn cloth-backed disposable Diapers (Briefs) for almost 6 years now. I keep trying different brands from different so-called medical websites. First thing I look for is how much the brief will supposedly hold, second, I read the customer comments, and last, I Do Not put my Night (diaper) on until just before going to bed. I also use a Booster Pad with my diaper. (By the way, I do not buy the most expensive brands out there as I pay for what I have found that works for me, not what the Insurance Company says I will get.) I also use Plastic Pants to hold all this in place. Will this work for you? I cannot say it was trial and error, and I have probably tried a dozen different briefs (Diapers) over the last almost 6 years. Just an FYI, I get emails from I think about 8 sites. I am always up to changing to a different brand, trying to stay within my budget. Most companies have a try one or a couple to see how they work for you.
And yes, that is probably what I put out in a year $1200-1300. Now, everything I just said works for me; this thing is trial and error, nobody knows what works for you; we are all different, no matter what the so-called experts say.

As people have said everyone is different. I have the same problem when sitting and wetting the pee runs towards the sides and to the leg gatherings. To make things worse my penis after the prostatectomy has retracted and it stays behind the scrotum stopping it from being directed downwards. I go very little before leaks occur at the legs when sitting. The diapers I use have more absorbency on the sides and double leg gatherings at the legs. I have tried several pullups because they are cheaper but they have not worked when sitting. If I am out standing and walking the tranquility nighttime pull ups work for me. The diapers also are easier for me to change in a bathroom stall, I do not have to take my pants and shoes off.

Pullups dont work for me. Depends are trash. Many of the on the shelf store bought ones are. The best disposables you pretty much have to order and are very expensive. I have gone to wearing clith diapers at home and for night times. No leak issues, greater comfortable and much less costly, even if you use a diaper service to launder them. Increasingly I am preferring the cloth diapers over the disposables when I am out and about away from home.

How did you find the laundry service? When I was trying cloth the only places around here did baby ones.

I was set to have the TURP surgery when I fell and dislocated my shoulder. I am currently in rehab twice a week so can't get the surgery for a few months. I absolutely have a sphincter issue because I have an urgency to defecate when I urinate all the time. I really don't know what caused everything to fail at once but I guess that's a symptom of getting old. No nighttime diaper is working now as I get between 1000-1300ML of fluids while I'm sleeping. Why these companies show 7 or 8 drops representing cups of liquid is an absolute lie. All diapers fail at 1000ML due to weight pulling them apart. It gets so bad for me that droplets of urine hit the floor when I get out of bed because the diaper is saturated.

My urologist had to nerve to tell me to set an alarm to wake up every couple of hours to use the bathroom because my continuous flow doesn't trigger a response in me to wake up to urinate. If you destroy your sleep by using an alarm your health will fail very quickly. I used to wake 2-3 times a night to use bathroom. That is different. You are naturally waking up and go right back to sleep after urinating. As a cruel benefit to incontinence because you don't wake up to use the bathroom you sleep more soundly. It will work out that way if you have light flow. If you have a heavy flow like me and wake up with your diaper leaking fluids around your legs then it isn't good because your sleep is being disrupted because you have to remove diaper, clean yourself up and put on a new one.

I'm hoping the TURP gives me some improvement because not emptying my bladder completely is probably causing much of the incontinence. However I know I will need further surgeries and that is a scary proposition.

Hey Mike -

Have you tried Northshore’s MegaMax? While they can be pricey it may be worth not dealing with leaks. I’ve heard a lot of folks say they are good if you’re a side sleeper too.
