Considering AUS

Hi everybody
It is exactly a year since radical prostatectomy and a course of targeted radiation. Although there has been periodic improvement in incontinence it is really not significantly better despite active practice of kegle physical therapy and active exercise.
I am reluctant to have the AUS although I know it is effective. I just do not like the idea of more surgery. The alternative is to live with the incontinence and deal with it the best way possible.
I am asking for informed opinions especially of those that have confronted this issue and whether they decided to proceed with AUS surgery or live with the incontinence and cope with it which I certainly can do although reluctantly .
Please respond with your best thoughts and ideas. Thank you in advance.

I had surgery 18 years ago and starting to experience erratic continence . My urologist recommended AUS. I am hesitant like you. I intend to closely monitor myself and see if other alternatives without surgery .

I am in the same boat. Radical prostatectomy two years ago and despite intensive kegels and physical therapy I need 1-2 pads a day. UGH! However, I am worried that another surgery will creat more problems, like ED. I look forward to hearing from others who have had the surgery and if there's an impact on erectile dysfunction.

After a radical prostatectomy in 2000 at age 61 I had Radiation the following year since my PSA started to rise. In 2009, after increased incontinence, I had a sling implanted which lasted until 2014. It was then that I had an AUS implanted and my problems were solved until this past April, 7 years later, I began having burning & bleeding when urinating. After 2 cystoscopies it was determined that the cuff area had eroded and the AUS had to be ex-planted. This surgery was done in June and in October the eroded area healed I am ready for a new implant to be done next Monday. I’m looking forward to getting my life back to normal again since the AUS had made it so. Hopefully things will go well and I'll be happy for a few more years.

i completely understand your hesitancy about the AUS as you would have to have another surgery. however, the AUS surgery is very non-invasive with quick recovery times and minimal pain.

if you want to chat more feel free to let me know, and if you decide to go forward, I would recommend finding a specialist which you can do here:

Hello,,, I cant say enough good things about the AUS... It gave me my life back. Surgery is not that bad.. I had the AUS last year in July and it worked pretty good. Still was leaking when sneezing or coughing or abominable pressure so they had to go in 3 weeks ago and resize my cuff. I am about 100 percent healed from that surgery.. Go to a good surgeon that does a lot of these a year and has a good track record... I went to Duke..

Marcel, Managing leakage is certainly a personal decision, but before you take the next step towards surgery, I would alert you to an alternative. I'm personally hesitant to consider surgery, given the short and long-term "potential" complications, I confess.
Info I've posted before on this site speaks to an aid that I and my engineer partner have developed over five years to deal with my own post-surgery incontinence. It's an external sleeve-like aid that comfortably puts upward pressure on the urethra, restricting flow. It can actually be worn 24 hrs a day, if need be. We are patent pending at the moment.
While I wear my aid all day long, I will sometimes wear it at night, if I've hydrated too much in the evening. With a backup liner for the occasional daytime moments of stress, there just is not a major leakage problem. Our product is not yet for sale, but we are still accepting volunteers who want to give it a try and provide us feedback. Info is available, if interested. I'm at amhelp@comcast.net Best wishes, Fynlee

I had the Male Urethral Sling surgery on September 14, 2021. I can say mine recovery was not as smooth as I had hoped.

I was leaking 17 ounces a day before the surgery. Now I leak less than 1/2 ounce a day and usually only a quarter of an ounce.

Both surgeries cut you from scrotum to anus and the healing is the same amount of time.

After the Male Urethral Sling, I took Miralax (generic store brand) one dose daily in my coffee for two weeks and half dose daily for 4 more weeks. My main concern was not doing anything that would cause the sling loops to slip.
