Cannot Initiate Urination

I am now 6 weeks into post robotic prostate surgery and have the leakage issues that most of us experience, which I am mentally prepared to battle. However, there are two problems that I am having problems with that I have a lot of anxiety about. The first is that I don't seem to be able to initiate urination voluntarily, meaning that I pass urine but it mainly just releases itself immediately after standing up from a seated position. I find that before standing I have to pinch my penis, thus blocking the urethra to allow myself to get to the bathroom and then releasing it to allow the flow of urine (similar to what an incontinence clamp would do). I am wondering if many men have experienced the same thing. I don't seem to get any feedback from two urologists, other than them saying, it is early days and I will regain this ability.
Secondly, after experiencing constipation the first week I have since been getting severe pain in the fleshy part of the pubic area into the groin on one side and this appears to hit me when pushing on to a scar just above this where it was a site from an inguinal hernia repair 5 years ago. I had a CAT scan which was inconclusive for any obvious signs of cause of this pain and the only thing that they saw was considerable stool in the bowel which may be diverticulosis but only to monitor that.
Does anyone else experience the lack of ability to initiate urination though?
Thank you.

This reminds me of a painful condition that occurs suddenly and sporadically for me. :( It's called "proctalgia fugax". It may or may not be relevant to your condition.

Look it up on Google.

I know that I found out really fast that I could sit for longer and longer without an urge to urinate but look out when I got up! (now a year and half post robotic) I had to learn the hard way that if I sat and drank whatever while sitting down, I better get up on a timed basis rather than a nerve signal basis. (and I still should do that, but MY control process was regained faster than I expected so I rely on Depend products for my stubborness. Be patient, your nerves and body parts have had a severe shock. They will need a lot of time to recover. Talk to your Doctor about the possibility of taking ProstiGenix. Huge help to me in gaining substantial control, (and sleeping thru the night) right away. I keep a package of Fig Newtons on the table for constipation. (I think the anesthetics did that to me) I would not plug up MY system like you are doing. A house becomes an expensive pile of wood and brick if you don't get water in, and waste materials out in a timely manner. Same with your Body. I said before many times that I called the outpatient center and asked them if they would put my catheter back in after it was out for a week, and I was filling up DEpend Guards daily. I was still waking up soaked until I started taking the Prostigenix again. Good Luck, we are on YOUR side!

@Anxious I won’t go as far as to say your situation is “normal”. I have found there are all kinds of “normal” after prostatectomy. I think you will have success doing kegels regularly and attempting to stop your urine stream once you start urinating in the bathroom. Some recommended not stopping your urine stream but that tells you for certain whether the ability to do so is present or not.

ANXIOUS- most have similar experience,as your urologists says give it time.
No doubt will improve over the next few months.

What you are experiencing is totally normal. Don't expect any real noticeable improvement until around 4months.

Before my RRP I could get some urine out every hour easily. Now I can go for hours and be in danger of wetting my brief constantly, but can I urinate when I try to? No. It's frustrating.

I'm getting so I can get some urine out every hour easily if I drank liquid liberally and I can feel the need to go. I'm by no means getting fully continent when I exert myself, but it ought to be a step in the right direction. The more I pee out on purpose is the less I have in me to pee out by accident.

I wouldn’t recommend this for anything else, but you seem like a good candidate for a penis clamp (not as scary as it sounds). Just means you won’t ha e to pinch your crotch.
