BPH treatment

What have you tried, medication or procedure? What were the side effects? Did the treatment relieve any incontinence?

I've tried Flowmax and couldn't tolerate the side effects. Cialis helps but I get leg pains from it after a few days.

My doctor just put me on Flomax. I've been working with it for a few days. They are not kidding about being dizzy or light headed on this med until the body gets use to it. I also take a 40mg water pill a few hours after I take Flomax. I have read online that BPH meds will make you retain fluids. I have been on the water pill way before Flomax due to edema in my legs. I have found out when taking both pills that I have to change my diaper more often until the water pill wears off for the day. I might have to take the Flomax at night instead and then take the water pill in the morning. I can keep you updated if you like.

Hi.
I’ve had BPH for 25 years. I’m prescribed flowmax and Calis together as a treatment.
I was told to take the flowmax at night, 2-hours prior to my bedtime. Flowmax helps empty the bladder, not retain.
The Calis is to be taken in the morning. It helps with blood flow, reduce prostate enlargement and BPH flare up. And stay hydrated as much as possible throughout the day.
Regardless, I still wet most nights. It’s more about preventing BPH flare ups and prostatitis infection. Then it is stopping leaks. Though, for most it does help with less night time urgency if taken properly.

I still have and had an overactive bladder and leaks prior to BPH.
Having said all that, I do notice that I have far less prostate problems while on Flowmax. If I mess up by letting my prescription run out, or can’t get a refill right away, I almost always run into trouble and get a prostate or prostatitis flare up.
Right now I get about one per year on average. It has been some years with none some with two.
Then I’m prescribed an antibiotic to get back in check.
When I do it’s a real pain in the ass, literally.
If I had to give you an analogy, it would be: Feels like your prostate is being poked with a knitting needle.
It’s ouch and sometimes comes with a fever or followed along with getting bound up, backed up constipated, GERd or heartburn. More complications if not treated immediately.
Know your symptoms of your BPH so you can stay on top of it.

My "journey" with prostate cancer began with severe BPH issues. I initially tried various medications in including Flomax but experienced either side effects (Flomax) or ineffective results. My urologist suggested a minimally invasive procedure called Urolift that didnt really work. I graduated to having a TURP procedure which was better than the urolift and more importantly, discovered the prostate cancer. The good news is that my prostatectomy took care of the cancer and also 100% addressed the BPH! :)

I started using Flomax or generic years ago for OAB. Then came the BPH.

For that I had the "REZUM" procedure. It's a very simple procedure. Under general anesthesia, my doctor inserts a device that shoots steam in the prostate where needed. In my case, I only needed 2 shots. Recovery is easy compared to any other surgeries I've had. The outcome was a stronger stream. Over the next year my symptoms improved as the dead tissue was absorbed naturally. I would recommend it.

I have never been incontinent, except for minor leaks if I wait too long. My problems are BPH and overactive bladder (urgency and frequency). So, I can't speak to the incontinence problem.

I have an implanted Medtronic Interstim device that has been very effective for the urgency and frequency. It looks exactly like my heart pacemaker.

Ok since I have started flomax, things are improving some. The dizziness went away. I don't have any other side affects to report. I still wear diapers 24/7 due to also using Lasix for edema. Flomax has improved my flow. I am still getting used to it now due to flooding the diaper and making sure they don't leak. I carry extra diapers with me know for that.

Hello again. I have been on Flomax now for a month and things with the side affects have cleared up. I'm on the lowest dose right now and only take it before bed. My doctor now wants me to start taking it in the morning right after breakfast. With the edema in my legs he now wants me to take my lasix (40mg) twice a day. I have started going to edema therapy to have my legs put in wraps and to get fitted for compression socks. My legs are not to bad but the doctor wants me to jump on it right away so it doesn't get bad. With the legs in wraps and taking water pills twice a day has made a big improvement. As for the incontinence, I have now made more purchases for the ABDL style diapers that hold a ton of liquid before changes until I get use to this increased volume of urine. I was going to buy adult pull-ups for during the day. Now with taking water pills twice a day changed that idea. LOL! The things we go through in life. There is one big thing I have to say is, Diapers are a godsend. With the stigma thats out there about adults wearing diapers, screw them all. If it's for medical or for comfort, either way it doesn't hurt no one. With all the ads on the television, I hope in the future the stigma gets destroyed and people can live with out being in shame for wearing. Wow! Sorry for getting off the subject in this forum.
Have a great Easter weekend.
