Bladder issues and sexual intercourse

Hello everyone,

I am very glad to have found this forum.

After intercourse with my partner my bladder becomes very irritated. I feel the urge to wee every 5 minutes - even when my bladder is empty.

I always had issues with sex and my bladder, even masturbating caused bladder irritation. The problem has recently gotten worse as even the next day my bladder remains irritated.

I once asked my gynecologist who replied that he didn't really know why but that there were worse problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Kayla

Id suggest finding a new doctor “there are worse problems” is the kind of dismisivness that shows that at a minimum, a second oppinion is called for.

I agree with Newbie - you need a new doctor. I don't have an answer to your problem, but you need a doctor who is willing to treat your concerns seriously. I saw my primary doctor this week and am switching my urologist because he doesn't take my concerns seriously. Many people on this forum have complained that our Urologist don't take our concerns seriously. Why do these specialist seem to have no empathy for us?

I agree, sometimes finding the right doctor takes a few times. Better to be upfront with them. If they don't-they should be honest about it. The body is complicated.

Hi Kayla, definitely find a doctor who takes his job much more seriously than the one you're seeing!!! There is really no call for a doctor to be so dismissive with his patients!!! You need someone to be empathetic and who shows concern and respect for his patients. I'm sorry this happened to you. Ask people you know for recommendations.

Kayla, once in a while I have bladder irritation too. You may want to try AZO. My daughter is a Physician Assistant who told me about the product. It worked for me.

It may be a symptom of being afraid to say "I don't know and I'm not interested".
Put that in the Med School text book on bad bedside manners.

It does sound like shortened or tight pelvic floor muscles. Is there any pain or discomfort with intercourse? With tampons? With internal pelvic exams?

Tight pelvic floor muscles can cause bladder issues like frequency, urgency, leakage, and pain. Bladder pain/irritation can actually be the pelvic floor muscles and not the bladder at all. Tight pelvic floor muscles can mimic a UTI. They can also mimic menstrual cramps.

Tight/shortened pelvic floor muscles can refer pain or discomfort to other areas which confuse practitioners such as the low back, the groin, the low abdomen, the hips, the tailbone, the glutes.

Absolutely find a new doctor. A urogyn would be good but I can tell you I have met many gynecologists and some urogyns that have no idea what a tight pelvic floor is. It actually blows my mind as they have to go through the pelvic floor muscles to get to the organs they specialize in.

I strongly recommend you seek advise from a pelvic floor physical therapist near you.
