Bladder Botox

Hi all

How long does the 1st round of Botox lasts?

I had it in late March and I found out the hard way I am in the <3% that it doesn't work for but made things worse?

Still having bad retention and utis afterwards

It lasts for 3-6 months with a gradual decrease. Sorry to hear it didn’t help you. If you tried a lower dose, you might get the benefits without the retention?

Do you know how many units they gave you? I started with 100, which is the standard starting point in the U.S. I’ve read that in other countries they start with 300 units! The max a human body can take before being poisoned is 400 units. I myself had to go up to 200 units which continues to work for me. I also get 200 unit in my neck, jaw, and trapezius muscles to prevent migraines. With the 200 units freshly in my bladder, I do have to strain a bit to pee for the first 2-3 weeks but it’s worth it to be able to get more decent sleep at night.

Best wishes that yours wears off fast so you can get respite. UTIs and retention are no fun!

I had it done in March and had worse retention to the point of Foley/ indwelling catheter that was taken out around May and reinserted on the 5th June and Uti found by the hospital on the 5th which I only found out by urology nurse last week (different hospital)

@snow - Re your migraines. I read recently that if you get a migraine, eat some ice cream. You will probably get that awful brain freeze, but when that goes away so will your migraine. Apparently it is best if you can do it soon after the migraine starts. One woman who was on day 2 of a migraine just happened to grab some ice cream because she was in the mood for something sweet. After she got over the brain freeze, she was amazed that her migraine disappeared too. - Pam

@SJPERSONAL, I had Botox injections on December 5, 2023. I was told I was injected 11 times. I do not know how many units that is. I am still benefiting from those injections 6 months and 18 days later. Time will tell when they start to wear off.

@Pammy53 Sounds like a fun thing to try, though it will hurt my osteoporosis teeth! But I’ll try it anyway!

Being a guy, the idea of bladder Botox freaks me out. I am getting sick of the spasms but not enough to go for Botox in that area yet.

@SJPERSONAL @snow - Dumb question of the day. I was just wondering, is the Botox procedure the same for men and women? - Pam

@Pammy53

I cannot imagine it is great procedure to have. I did the Botox shots into muscles in my rectum before. They put me to sleep for those.

No way I am doing bladder ones without being out cold.

I have written about this previously, but want to share it again. My current urologist, my fifth in 7 years, offers a nitrous oxide product that I breathe in to take the edge off during the injections. It is called Pro-Nox.... https://www.pro-nox.com/...

It relieved my anxiety and other than the first injection, when I didn't breathe correctly, I never felt a thing.

I guess the only way to know what urologists use it would be to do some research where you live.

Hope this helps someone.

About 6-7 months out from 100 units at the end of Dec. 2023. Symptoms have returned but are not at 100% compared to before the procedure. I'm interested in doing it again but I'm trying to get the real cost of the procedure to me since I'm not at my deductible (and don't expect to be this year).

@fleemoore I’ve had three neurologists and none of them offer the nitrous but I think they all should. But they all offer, if you ask, a combo of a pain pill with a Valium so both the anxiety and the pain are reduced which makes it far more tolerable. But then you do need a driver, which is fine for most of us. Last time I didn’t take enough so I could drive myself and I regretted it and probably won’t do that again unless I absolutely have to.

@lorumipsum Botox costs $11-$15 per unit x 100 units = $1,100 to $1,500, plus then there’s the doctor’s fee which is a few hundred usually. I think that will give you a fair estimate. Hopefully your deductible is less than that?

Cool name. I know the Latin name “pain itself” and also its context when used in publishing. Ipso facto is another fun expression to say.
