I don't think I worded that very well. Mine is still a month in the future, scheduled for October 20.
I've been warned to expect a fair bit of pain since I'm getting what is sometimes referred to as a "Barbie butt," where my anal sphincter muscles will get removed along with all of my colon. That's a hard spot to get to heal, and the muscles that run through that area are used more than you'd think. I'll also be unable to sit down for weeks.
The actual ileostomy doesn't worry me as much. I've known for many years that it would eventually get to this point, and I'm well aware of how much my ulcerative colitis has limited my life. I'm not looking forward to all the bag changes, skin problems, leaks, and general hassle of an ostomy, but in a lot of ways I think it'll be less of a problem than having UC. Besides, incontinence has already gotten me used to always having supplies with me, and adding a few spare bags and wafers to my kit isn't that big of a deal.
I may feel differently this time next month, though. I'll have to let you know then.
