62 Year Old Male Once in a While Incontinent At Night

Hi All,

I am new to this blog. I am a 62 year old male. I have had intermittent bed wetting incidents since I was a child. As an adult, I may wet the bed 2-3 times in a row every 6 months or so. Seems to happen when the weather changes but not always the case. When I told my primary doctor and urologist last year they both looked at me like I had 2 heads. The only diagnosis my urologist came up with was a very large prostate. I am married and my wife understands but does get upset that I cannot find any help. I am embarrassed to sleep at friend's homes in case I have an accident. I tried wearing special underwear but since it only happens every 6 months or so I no longer wear them.

Any thought or suggestions?

Sorry to hear about this. I would look for things that could be causes like drinking too much before bed, too much alcohol if you drink, too much caffeine or fruit-citrus.
Sounds like you need a 2nd opinion from your urologist. Or go to an incon clinic.

You might try making a bladder diary. If your accidents are that far between, it could get a little tedious to keep track. If you do, try writing what you are drinking. When you have an accident, refer to the log to see if you did anything differently.

I tried the log but after a month or 2 without any accidents I stopped. I haven't been able to pin it down to any particular drink. One thing I noticed was if I went to bed constipated sometimes I wet. That happened last night and I woke up with a couple of drops wetting my underwear.

Being constipated does play a small role in childhood bedwetting, not sure in adults. I am 68 and have wet the bed almost my whole life. It's tough to pin point a cause when it is very intermittent. It could be from a bladder irritant of some kind, like coffee, tea, pop, alchohol, etc. Try to keep a diary of some kind to pin point the issue. Good luck in finding an answer.

It’s ironic, but your bedwetting would in some ways be easier to manage if it happened more often. At least then, you’d know what to expect and could work out a method of managing it. In your case, my only real suggestions are to put a waterproof cover on your mattress and to wear a high-capacity diaper whenever you’re going to have to sleep away from home. Good luck!
