Hi,
I am a 50 Yrs old Male, and I am wetting the bed at night, and I do not know why.
I had some emotional trauma last year (not physical, only emotional), and I am not sure if that is a factor. I am not sure how much Stress could contribute to wetting the bed.
This has been happening to me several nights a week, for the past 7 or 8 months or so. Some nights are better than others.
It seems, when I eat Fruit or a sweet (sugary foods), or white rice or white potatoes, during the day,it can be a trigger to this happening to me at night when I am sleeping. It is something that happens beyond my control while I am sleeping. I am not sure if these/certain foods are really a major factor, but it is a personal observance that I have had. In other words, I have been trying to monitor what I eat, and I have noticed when I eat any of the above foods, wetting the bed seems to occur on such given night. Although there are some times that it has happened , when I did not eat any of the above, but less so.
I am just trying to figure out what the cause is.
I am not a diabetic, and I had Prostate checked and all is ok in these regards.
Are there certain food that I should not eat and certain foods that can help resolve this ?
Any advise is appreciated.
Does anyone here have any advise ?

Sorry to hear about your issues. The food you mention are all Carbs. Don't know how that works into a cause and effect but it can't be a coincidence. I am not a fan of Urologist (at least the ones I have had). DO you have an good GP that you can go to. It might make sense to see if you cut out carbs whether that has an impact for you.
Good Luck.

Thank You. Yes, I do have a GP who found that I had a Urine Tract infection (aprox 6 months ago).
He gave me antibiotics and that helped a bit, for the week that I took them.
He then ref me to the Urologist.
Before I went to the Urologist, I went to a holistic Dr, and the holistic Dr gave me some supplements (pro biotics), that he said will reduce yeast. Based on his examination, he said he thinks yeast could be a contributor. That has helped some (taking these pro biotic suppliments for aprox 2 months now.
My sister also suggested pre biotics (which is a powder with scooper, that I mix into a drink or food once daily). This also seems to help a little bit.
I then went to the Urologist, last week. He examined prostate and said I am fine in that area.
He did say he noticed that My bladder was not fully emptying after urinating.
The Urologist, asked me to come back to do a test where he inserts catheter (not sure if spelled correctly) info my penis , filling my bladder with water. He said that process will take aprox 15 minutes. I have hesitated from doing that. If Possible , I would like to avoid doing a painful examination that is not necessary. I have not gone back to the urologist as of yet , to do that. I did go back to my GP and told him what the Urologist said. My GP said I could wait (and do nothing for the time being) so to see how it goes , in coming weeks/month. I am thinking about asking my GP to refer me to a nutritionist. Any further thoughts and/or suggestions ?

Hi newhere, I don't know much about carbs, etc., but monitoring your diet may help. Then again, how about stress? These are extremely stressful times we are living in now and the way stress affects each person manifests itself in various ways. That may sound simplistic but a lot of times it's the really simple things that trigger things such as what you're going through now. After all looking at grim headlines day after day for going onto four months has to have some sort of effect. But, it's just a thought!

I have had the test your urologist wants to do (and probably many of the people on this board have had it) and while not fun, it is survivable. It can help determine if there is a blockage in your urninary track. Probably worth doing to eliminate problems - However, I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, so i don't know if my opinion has any value. I wish you luck in your search for a cure.

Do you ever have issues with constipation? When my bedwetting went from 1 or 2 times a year to 3 or 4 times a month, I went to the doctor's for answers. One thing I was told is that constipation can cause the bladder not to empty properly, then when you're sleeping (and in a different body position than when you're awake..) the bladder releases the residual urine. Also, taking antibiotics not only kills the BAD bacteria causing an infection, but also the GOOD bacteria that lives in your intestines and that can cause constipation. (That's where the pro-biotics help.)

All that being said, there are a lot of other things that could be causing it. In my case, they are still looking for the cause. It could be genetics, since I was a bedwetter as a kid and teen, and my father was a bedwetter too. When I was a teen, the doctor said based on my history, I could have issues with it thru out my life, with it getting worse as I aged. (Just what a kid wants to hear, right?) So now as I get to retirement age, it looks like bedwetting could be a regular thing again. (Along with random daytime urge incontinence.) Fortunately, having to wear diapers again as an adult doesn't bother me nearly as much as it did as a child. They're just another tool, like eye glasses or a cane.

I would absolutely get that test(s) done by the urologist. If he/she can’t determine the cause of your problem, then I’d go to another urologist, and then maybe a nutritionist. I’ve never seen anyone on here write that changing their diet annihilated their bladder problem(s). It may help, but it’s unlikely to solve your symptom entirely. It’s easy and free to find out online what food and beverage to avoid to help with incontinence, so you might want to do that to avoid paying for an expensive nutritionist, which insurance companies usually don’t pay for. GP’s are only useful for simple things like an ear infection or an annual check-up. Just like their title says, they’re “general,” not special at anything, and definitely not equipped to do thorough bladder analyses. Yes, that test your urologist wants to do hurts for 15 minutes, out of your entire life. It’s worth it to get to the bottom of what you’re experiencing. Also, it’s unlikely that you started bedwetting out of the blue solely because of emotional stress.

Appreciate all the thoughts , comments and suggestions.
Regarding the Urologist 15 minute test, You mentioned that it hurts. Is it extremely painful, slightly painful, or how would You describe it ?
Are the side affects after the urologist 15 minute test, such as blood in Urine, or can sexual function be affected from that test ?

Yes, I can see stress possibly being a factor as well.
Stress can totally wear me out..

One thing I have noticed is that exercise (Sweating) seems to help.
On days that I have had more exercise and more active movement , this problem did not occur (on most of those nights).

Another comment above suggested constipation possibly being a factor.
Though I don't have constipation often, I can understand what You are suggesting.

Before this started to occur, I remember drinking iced tea often.
Since it started happening, I have stayed away from iced tea completely.

Before this started happening, I do recall occasionally feeling slight pressure in lower left abdomen area. More often when eating fried foods or drinking coffee. Since staying away from Coffee and fried foods, that issue has went away (lower left abdomen feels fine now).

I may be over examining. I am just trying to narrow down what the cause could be.

Of all the things the Urologist has done to me, that test ranks #3rd in pain. It will hurt, but it is not excruciating pain. It also didn't hurt after the procedure. It is worth doing as a way of eliminating problems. Good Luck!

Well when I was 47 was wetting the bed also started having accidents during the day. Dr. Did finger prostate exam and said that was fine. Sent to urologist did a finger test said okay. Ultrasound determine it was enlarged. It was cancer. Removed, radiation, that was 7 years ago. Still use pad during day and need brief at night.

I had an ultrasound prostate test at the Urologist, and he said it is ok.
I thought that was irritating and slightly painful.
I'm sorry to hear that You had to go through that. Glad to hear it was removed.

Regarding the urologist 3rd in pain test (Stuart) , is it possible to describe the pain ?
Did the Urologist discover and/or resolve anything , because of taking that test ?
Aslo, if I may ask, based on your experiences,
what was the #1 and #2 pain test at urologist ?

Dalexwitte, After all that You went through, do You think the cancer you had was the cause of the Bed Wetting or is the cause something else ?

#1: Rezume: A procedure where they put a tube up your penis and apply steam to clear any blockage
#2: Prostate Biopsy: they take 12 biopsys of your prostrate
#3: Inserting water into the penis.

It is not really painful, just uncomfortable.
It was a way for the Urologist to see how the bladder deals with emptying itself when it is full. He explained that it was a way of eliminating possible problems. I would never do the Rezume procedure (while awake) and would not want to go through the biopsys again, but inserting water in to the bladder was really not that big a deal. I think it is a basic test they all do.

I wish you luck whichever way you, and let us know how things turn out.

Botox is the most painful. I’m a female. For me the next worst was the test your doctor wants to do. All catheters hurt, but my urologist used an extra wide, metal one instead of a normal-sized, flexible plastic one. It burns, pinches, and generally feels uncomfortable to have that test done. But like I said, I’ve been through worse and what’s 15 minutes of your life to handle something as horrible as wetting the bed? And yes, it absolutely helped my doctors reach the final conclusion that I have neurogenic bladder after falling down a cliff snowboarding and permanently severing nerves between my bladder and my brain. It also helped prove to my insurance company and other doctors that I wasn’t exaggerating.

Sorry that happened to you, I can’t imagine how difficult and painful the fall and recovery was and has been.

Hi Newhere, I think sweating after exercise may have something to do with you not having a problem at night. After all it is liquid and so is urine. So I would think maybe the more you sweat the less urine you produce, especially in hot weather. Of course the thing to prevent is dehydration in hot weather because you could be setting yourself up for other problems. Do keep up your fluid intake and adjust your protection accordingly.

Thank You for sharing your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Has anyone here experienced Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causing bed wetting ?

I am a 69 year old bedwetter. I have been bedwetting nearly my whole life. I had daytime issues until about age 6 too. I didn't use any diapers or plastic pants after age 3. I continued to bed wet all the way thru high school finally stopping around age 18, or so I thought. My bedwetting started up again shortly after originally stopping, but it was hit or miss. I wore no protection back then because it wasn't readily available. Started wetting every night around 24 and continued off and on again for several years. Came back again around age 36 and continues to this day, only now I wear diapers and plastic pants because they are readily available. Had numerous tests done to find cause, none found. Told to handle it as I see fit.
