TURP Post surgery, recovery, expectations

Hello,

This is my first post. I had TransUrethral Resection of the Prostrate (TURP) on 1/25. I believe the surgery actually went well; but, I had postop complications with clotting and internal bleeding. I will forgo the details of the pain of flushing, manual irrigation, and attempts to free the clots. I had a second surgery on 1/27 to remove clots and stop bleeding through cauterization.

The clotting, bleeding and second surgery is a risk of TURP with about 6% incidence. I was unlucky in that regard; but, lucky to have a good surgeon. It was unfortunate; but, in my case, I don't believe it was medical error.

I was discharged on 1/28, late afternoon. I had problems with incontinence and frequent urination at least every 20 minutes; and up to 8 times per hour. Color has been good, very little blood. I do not have a sensation of a full bladder. I was prescribed Oxybutynin XR on 1/30. After about 24 hours on that, I pee every hour to hour and a half. This is a marked improvement; but, sleep is rough having to get up about every hour. I also had no control; but, have regained some control in the past 2 to 3 hours. So, leaking, spilling isn't a problem.

Pain is still 1-2. I understand that it can take 6 to 18 months to get to full recovery (and, for some, incontinence continues).

Has anyone had a similar experience post TURP? How long for you to regain control, be able to sleep the night, go to work? I work from home; so, it is easier on me; but, I have not been able to focus and do work yet. I am hoping I might be able to work by Monday.

If someone can identify with my experience, I'd like to hear yours to help me guide my own expectations even knowing that we are all different, it would help.

Thanks,

After my first TURP I did have significant bleeding and passing of clots, but things improved steadily over a 4-6 week period. I also was working from home at that time, so "going to work" wasn't an issue. I did hold off any air travel for a couple of weeks. Your experience seems within the normal range. Good luck!

Thanks Carey,

I look forward to steady improvement. I am experiencing a slight increase in pain. I believe most pain is at the catheter insertion point - of course, no catheter now. Just hoping for some sleep and a better tomorrow.

Hello, this is only my second post. I had TURP in January 2020. No complications, but still have overactive bladder, which we both knew would probably be the case. There is only one complication but it is very personal. Started with pills, then to PTNS which made a difference. Now am 5 days out from Interstim Therapy Stage II. You can google it. This is helping with frequency and urgency.

Us males have different outcomes from TURP. Some issues are harder to live with than others. There will be improvement and better sleep.
