Still incontinent fifteen years later.

I had radical prostate surgery when I was fifty years old. I had to use 4-5 pads a day, with know change after kiegal excersizes. Laying flat when sleeping was better, but still sometimes a small amount would leak.
The sling was recommended so that's what I did. Duke University Hospital. Absolutely no help and it was almost as miserable recovery as the prostate surgery.
I can't swim in a pool or anywhere.Constant dribble or more. Always need pads close at hand, just in case. Almost never feel the urge.
I'm 66 years old now and divorced and in good health otherwise. Very hard to reveal to a potential new mate. I have know idea what to do or a doctor to trust. Very disheartening.

Sam,

It sounds like you experience a small amount of leakage and are not completely dry. After 15 years you have what you have. At 66 years old you are amongst good company in experiencing some type of leakage.

Many women use panty liners for their leakage protection. Men who have experienced the same procedure you have or other continence issues also wear protection.

It is better to accept and accommodate than to deny and isolate.

As for telling your female companions. If a little leakage is going to determine whether she likes you or not my recommendation would be to move on.

My 2 cents.

@SamC I feel for you, Sam. It has to be very discouraging to still be leaking after 15 years post-surgery and after the sling procedure. Many women experience leakage too, and a potential partner may not mind if you leak a little. I always think it's best to be honest up front if you think the relationship has the potential to become intimate. Let your potential partner decide what she's willing to put up with. I suspect you will be surprised how kind and understanding many people can be.

Hey Sam;

Welcome to the NAFC. You, like many others here including myself can relate to the emotional and mental toll that bladder issues have on ourselves. But like I've always said in the past - "You are not alone".

That's one of the things that have kept me going these past couple of years since having severe bladder issues - and regardless of what your diagnosis or condition is - it does not change you for who YOU are.

If you have any questions or need any support - we are here for you Sam. It's nice to see more people come in here. I know what its like to feel embarassed and ashamed to accept yourself with these symptoms. Sometimes the biggest thing that would help is validation that we are equal and not less.

Blessings In Christ,

Sam, You should seriously consider having an AUS inserted to control your leakage. There are many comments on this site about the AUS and most are very positive. I had one inserted a year ago and it isn't perfect but it makes life almost normal again. I went from 20 oz a day to less than an oz a day.

Hi all, nothing too unusual about my situation it would seem from reading here. Age 76, had radical prostatectomy about 18 months ago, all went well except still having some leakage but fairly manageable.

I'm getting by for most of the day without much problem, but towards evening the leakage sets in. I wonder if others have any ideas about how to overcome this. I'm doing the Kegel exercises and all the usual stuff. I have no problem while sleeping,so that is something to be thankful for.

just curious about you saying you had a artificial sphincter placed a year ago although it isn't perfect ...what do you mean by that..

Hello @M07002S

I would highly caution from putting personal contact information in this forum. While this is a National Association For Continence Forum for those and loved ones suffering from bladder and bowel health issues - the board can be accessible from anyone in the United States.

Sometimes we are victim's of others who use us for our story and condition. For instance, I once worked with an individual for summer help who would make constant diaper jokes around others about another employee who was offered a lateral transfer to our department. I question whether or not he was saying these things around myself and others for pleasure.

Furthermore, I once was a victim of a trend known as "catfishing" by an individual around my age who used myself for my story of enuresis humiliation and shame.

Please be careful when sharing personal contact information as you do not know who will reach out to you; especially when you are sharing information about minors. Just trying to keep you and your family safe.

Blessings In Christ,
Honeeecombs.
