Should I have Botox?

Hi guys! First time poster, here. So, my urologist has suggested I have Botox for my overactive bladder and nighttime bed wetting. He offered the other options as well, such as the nerve stimulation and the pacemaker, but the Botox seemed the least invasive to me. I’ve tried several of the medicines, but they didn’t really work for me. What started as OAB soon progressed to bed wetting every 2-3 hours and “regular” OAB during the day. I’m 38 and really depressed over the situation, obviously. I have some other health issues such as chronic kidney disease and liver disease, as well as chronic back pain. So, I’m a mess. Lol Anyway, I’m desperate to get rid of the OAB/bed wetting and Botox seemed like it might be a good solution. My urologist acts like he hasn’t had many patients develop urinary retention. But in reading the comments about it here, I’m becoming a little scared that it’s very likely. So, I’d just like your opinions on it, if you don’t mind. Thanks so much!

I read somewhere that 6 to 10 percent of patients develop urinary retention. Obviously it also depends on the skills and level of experience of the doctor. Good luck.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the input. Nice to know you’ve had a good experience, Pbk123. Does it work from the beginning, or does it take a little time or more injections for it to be beneficial? I’m pretty much ready to try just about anything to make my problem go away.
And MsAnxious, thank you for that info. It makes it a little less terrifying for me to think of it like that.
Of course, anyone else who knows anything about using Botox for this issue, I’d definitely be happy to hear your opinion on it.

A few weeks after the injections, I started to experience less urinating. That was 10 months ago and now I can’t remember what things were like pre- injections. 😊

That’s so great to hear, Pbk123. I’m praying to have the same result, obviously. Did you have to have a cath following the injection? I read that somewhere in this forum and I wasn’t aware of that. Not that it would stop me. I’m just curious what the procedure really entails.

The doctor made sure I could urinate on my own before I left his office after the injections, and I have not needed any catheters whatsoever.

Well, I think my doctor might do mine at the hospital, but hopefully will just do the same as yours. I’m pretty sure my urologist is quite experienced at performing this procedure. He’s been a urologist for at least 30 years. And like I said earlier, he said very few of his patients have ever developed urinary retention. I hope that I’m actually lucky enough to have a good result with it, as well.

Hi there, I went into complete retention about three days after my injections and have been self Cathing several times a day for six months. On the positive side, the number of bladder spasms and leaks went down a lot. I have now got so used to the self Cathing that I am considering having the injections again rather than going back to random spasms throughout the day and the associated leaks, cheers Phil
