Hello, I just joined this forum. I turn 20 tomorrow and I’m really afraid to talk to someone about my UI. I went to the doctor as a young teenager and the doctor said it’s my fault and I need to simply wake up. I find myself sleeping through the entire night without waking up to go. I’m dry most nights but it’s probably at least once a week. It’s really embarrassing because I don’t know how to bring this up with people. Mostly my doctor.
I have a few questions that maybe you guys can help answer:
1. How do I find a doctor who can help? I don’t have a primary care doctor yet but I have really good insurance.
2. What are some short term solutions you have found to be helpful? I find cutting back fluids help but then I’m thirsty at 10pm when I go to bed.
3. Do you know of any tricks to wake up at night? I’ve heard an alarm at the same time every night will train your bladder in a negative way.

Any questions you can help answer is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Urologist would be a good start to help you out. In the meantime, do what we in this forum do best. Protect and conquer. LOL. Sorry, I get dramatic sometimes. I have lived most of my life wearing diapers at night. Now I wear 24/7. Depending on your size, you might get by using pullups. If not, look around on the internet at medical supply companies. Give them a call and have them send out samples until you find the right fitting diaper for you. I am sure you are very embarrassed on what is happening. We have all been there. You have come to the right place for advice and support. Don't hesitate and don't be afraid to ask you doctor about your issues. Doctors are there to help out with any issues you have. Just remember, you are not the only one out there with underlying issues. You will have to go through some tests to rule out infections or disease. This should help get cha going in the right direction. We are here to help and give support. Take some time also and go through the forum here and read some posts. They might be helpful for you. Chow for now.

@NoahP welcome to the forum. Feel free to ask questions. Don't worry about seeing a doctor, it won't be anything new to them. Cheers Phil

Urologist. I would like to say any urologist but they are not all created equal, even university ones. Still, if near a teaching university, seek out one that spevializes or has an interst in your problem, otherwise you might get stuck with a prostate, cancer, stone or whatever doc. Do your research on line and make sure it matches what the appointment desk tells you.

Hi Noah,

Don’t sweat this, you are far from alone.

Hi Noah,

Good to meet you and welcome to the forum. Great advise and people here as you have already seen.

As to your questions. Brining it up with a doctor I'd say don't worry about it. Yes total embarrassing to you, but not to the doctor. They have heard it all and a lot more before. If they don't have any information, recommendations, or solutions they can refer you to a specialist who might can work with you. So my advise there is try not to be embarrassed, going knowing that you will be embarrassed (its human nature to be) but remember that the doctor is not embarrassed and wants to help the best they can or refer you to someone who can.

Short term solutions, there are many. First I by your post I am assuming that you are talking about bedwetting. You mention that you were wetting as a young teen. Has it continued since then or has it recently returned? I bedwet occasionally. like only a couple times a month more or less, not even a weekly thing. While for the most part it is totally random as to when I will bedwet I have noticed that sometimes I can point to a potential trigger. Being over tired is one where if I am my change of wetting my bed is increased. Also being stressed is a trigger that I have noticed. In the past when very very stressed about something I've peed the bed 2-3 times in that week during that time. But again it is so random so I look at these as potential indicators. I'd say look at the day(s) leading up to a wet night. Pay attention to what is happening, going on, stressors, and food you are eating. See if you can determine and patterns leading up to a wet night. If you can identify any maybe you can modify your activities to reduce those potential triggers.

Finally as to tricks to waking up at night. That can be a tricky one. While setting an alarm to wake yourself up to go pee during the night might help to keep you and your bed dry but it also interrupts your sleep. I am like you, I sleep through the entire night. Even on nights when I do pee the bed I sleep through to the morning. Interrupting my sleep might cause me to be less ready for the next day. So for this its is a choice. If waking up sometime during the night is not a bother for your readiness for the next day then try it. However since you sleep through the night you probably do not know when you are wetting. This might make it hard to find the right time to set an alarm to wake you to go pee before you wet. Like for me based on the few times I do wake up after a wetting or half wake up and fall back asleep and the time I was using a bedwetting alarm it seems that I tend to wet the bed sometimes between 3 and 5 in the morning. But if you are not sure, or it he time is random throughout the night then knowing when to set the alarm to wake you would be difficult.

Feel free to ask anything here or DM. Great bunch of people here all willing to support and help out as needed. We also have some fun convos that have nothing to do with bedwetting or incontinence so feel free to enjoy the conversations and support.
