Kegel Exercises

Hello, I am 4 months post-radical surgery. Super healthy. 74 years 3 months and 21 days without a hospital visit until day of surgery. I can't get the Kegel exercises. I cannot figure if I am doing them correctly or not. Any advice? I can't control leakage when I am up and active. Sitting is fine. I can get to the restroom and pee like a racehorse but can't stop it during. I get up once sometimes twice at night. Usually for precaution. If cooking, I can go about 10 minutes standing then have to hurry to the bathroom. I never had getting up at night prior to surgery, fyi. Any help/advice would be wonderful.

I'm no expert, but I'd suggest a test.

With a fuller bladder, sit on the john and begin to let loose. Then stop the flow completely if you can, using your internal muscles.. Then release. Then stop the flow completely again. Etc.

My understanding is that this is what Kegels do. So if this is what you're doing when you practice Kegels, you're doing it right.

I trust others will correct me if I'm mistaken.

I understand. You squeeze like you need to pee and you’re trying to hold it until you get to the toilet. Perform that while in the bathroom. If your penis moves up and down, even if slightly, you’re doing them correctly. Controlling leakage while up and active is hard. I’m 9 weeks out, and your symptoms are the same as mine. It will take probably a few more months for our bladder routine to return to “normal”. Hang in there, dude!

Also, void whenever you need to. It will help with retraining the bladder while the nerves down there heal.

@Jsoules47 I am 66yo and 3 1/2 months post surgery. Since 4 weeks post surgery I have been seeing a specialist pelvic physiotherapist every 3 weeks who has been guiding my exercise regimen and ensuring I am doing them properly. And she has been worth every cent she has cost me, at 3 1/2 months I have been seeing noticeable steady ongoing improvement for the last 3-4 weeks, just as she forecast when I first started seeing her.

If you are not able to see a specialist pelvic physiotherapist, this guy is a very experienced one in Australia who has a youtube channel with some helpful plain language videos, and he has also written an inexpensive book I found very helpful which is now in its 3rd printing. Links below for his youtube channel and the book.

I agree with Ekimretlaw; while i am not suffering from anything post surgery - my urologist recommended Kegals the beginning of this year prior to my interstim test.

I'll be honest; I'm lazy sometimes about doing them . I know I should be doing them regularly, but it's not an easy task. Living with Overactive Bladder Syndrome which is the root of my bladder spasms and urge - I should probably be doing them daily.

I will say a prayer for you that you get positive results. You've come to the right place - it's a good group of people that know what your going through as seen above.

Take care,
HC.

Squeeze (tighten) recriminations, follow through with scrotum to your penis.

Do quick flicks tighten and loosen Repeat 10 times

Do legal and hold
Release. Wait repeat
Increase length of hold over time

Be sure I breath
Takes pracrice

Kegels come naturally to a woman from a young age, but I benefitted dramatically from having a physical therapist teach me how to do them better. Now instead of getting an instant urge in a movie theatre and losing urine, I can do a big Kegel and hold it so I have 3-5 minutes to get out to the toilet.

Ok, I think I have figured out the Kegal thing. I have been doing it since a nice gentlemen posted the procedure. I used to go and let it rip. Peeing like a race horse. Wow
The last 5 days or so I pee really slowly. Then do a kegal pullup and stop the urine. Then slowly release and pee a bit more. Repeating 3 to 4 times. It is amazing,, finally I can feel the pelvic floor muscles. I can tighten the muscles when I am getting up and get to the toilet without leaking. It is a frustrating slow process but I think progress is happening. I couldn't figure which muscles were controlling the pelvic floor. Now I feel them. Hope this makes sense and helps.

@Jsoules47 Yes, it is a good feeling to know where those muscles are. I remember the PT session so clearly where my therapist taught me about it. I could tell them and there it was a life-changing moment fir me. And yes, Kegels definitely did/do help me with some bladder control during the day.
