BPH and incontinence

For those that struggle with BPH and incontinence I have some questions.

Did your incontinence get worse with time?

Did you end up wetting the bed?

Currently I have OAB with the BPH. I do have some leakage and the urges are sometimes strong. As I said in my other thread I have tried several meds ti no avail.

I use pads occasionally pull-ups if the urges are strong. Overall the pull-ups work best for confidence that I won’t leak but are usually overkill. My worst nightmare is wetting the bed but fortunately that hasn’t happened.

Next urologist appointment is in January.

Hi Aug168,

Sorry to hear you are suffering.

I have the same conditions but can't say it has got worse over time exactly. I manage my symptoms with Botox, intermittent catheters and external catheters and collection bags.

Did your incontinence get worse with time?

I'm 71 and my urgency and frequency got worse with age. My dad had the same urgency issues when he was alive.

Did you end up wetting the bed?

I have not had to deal with bed wetting.

Currently I have OAB with the BPH. I do have some leakage and the urges are sometimes strong. As I said in my other thread I have tried several meds ti no avail.

I tried every (I think) med. Ended up having 65% of my prostate removed last March via the Green Laser Light Surgery. It relieved by BPH and frequent UTIs, but now I'm dealing with OAB. I had an Interstim installed by a previous urologist, but it didn't help. I just started Myrbetriq and Vesicare (solifenacin) today to see if it will help with OAB. If not, I plan to get another stimulator device installed and have the Interstim removed.

I use pads occasionally pull-ups if the urges are strong. Overall the pull-ups work best for confidence that I won’t leak but are usually overkill. My worst nightmare is wetting the bed but fortunately that hasn’t happened.

I continue to use pads when I know I'll be in public. I am retired and live in the country so when I get the urge and I'm outside, I can go where I want.

Next urologist appointment is in January.

I hope you have confidence in your urologist. If not, consider changing.

Good luck, AUG168.

I'm 62, and have an enlarged prostate (BPH)and incontinence. My incontinence problems began about 20 years ago when I was diagnosed with diabetes. At that time, my incontinence was diagnosed OAB, and I was prescribed meds to address urgency. The meds didn't work as well as I would have liked, and I eventually stopped using them.

My incontinence has become worse over the years--I think the now enlarged prostate has caused the increase in problems, and now have problems with bedwetting. I wear Depend Real Fit pull-ups during the day, and Megamax diapers at night. I take Pygeum herbal capsules for my BPH, and I believe that helps with my BPH, but still have urgency problems, and bedwetting problems. I prefer to use herbal options, rather than surgery or Pharma meds.

Did your incontinence get worse with time? Yes

Did you end up wetting the bed? Yes, once or twice a week

Before my recent Prostatectomy I wore tape-up diapers and PUL pants 24/7 as pull-ups would often leak. Due to the bedwetting my bed was/is always protected with a large good quality leak-proof pad. Now 3 months post surgery my incontinence has changed to a constant drip-drip with mini-floods so I still have to wear diapers 24/7 although pull-ups will now work for limited amounts of time. I'm doing my Kegel exercises and hope to eventually be better continence-wise than pre-surgery.

For a few years prior to prostatectomy I suffered with enlarged prostate, OAB and urgency. Urination was difficult and uncomfortable. The urgency was painful and hard to control. I had to urinate very frequently, which led me to wear daytime protection against accidents. I also had pre-existing IBS with bowel urgency. Wearing protection also helped with this.

At night sleeping was difficult. The discomfort of a persistently over-full bladder led me to wake up every 50 minutes needing to urinate. I never slept deeply enough or long enough to wet the bed - or to feel refreshed.

Five years ago I had a radical prostatectomy, which changed my bladder function completely, but not for the better. I've not been able to recover control of my bladder since the operation, and I'm now dependent on pads day and night. My bowel urgency was also impacted negatively, and the urgency is so strong now that I regularly have accidents.

@AUG168 two pieces of advice.

First: I strongly recommend that you get an absorbent washable bed pad to place over your bed sheets. These are really effective at soaking up a nighttime accident, and they are easy to remove wash and replace (surprisingly they dry quite fast too).

You may never need it, but it will give you peace of mind that if you do wet the bed, you won't soak your bedding or ruin the mattress.

Second: beware of medication. Every pill has side effects. Often they are worse than the intended effect. And also too often a urologist will only focus on the impact the medication has on the bladder, not on your life. As @fleemoore said, if you don't feel complete confidence in your urologist consider changing. You will only get one chance to get your treatment right.

One last ray of hope: my experience with surgery wasn't so good, but it had a silver lining. I used to wake up seven or eight times a night, never sleep deeply, and never feel refreshed or alive the next day. Now I wet the bed, but I sleep through the night and my quality of sleep is much improved.

Its not much, but its something.

Good luck with your journey @AUG168. Everyone's experience is different. I hope that things work out well in your case.
