Bedwetting from Dreaming

Hi: I'm new here and wanted to share my experience. I've been wetting the bed at night, on occasion, thinking I was on the toilet, until I felt wet, which woke me right up, and realized I was indeed NOT on the toilet and felt embarrassed when had to tell my husband what just happened. Has anyone else experienced this? It only happens when I dream I am ON the toilet when I am NOT! I am 60 yrs old. Has happened twice to me so far.

I find I have dreams where I am frantically looking for a toilet and can’t find one. I can’t find a bathroom or I find the bathroom but there’s no toilet in it, etc. But I’m always incontinent at night

Yes, multiple times in the last decade. Hit and miss night time incontinent, but when I dream about the bathroom, it's always a 'hit' kinda night.

it is common change in women at about 60. you can see yiur unconscious state is trying to wake you.
best get a water proof matress protector and if you can tolerate a night maxi pad in underwear to reduce the effectwhen it does happen. There are alot of jokes about older women getting up repeatedly at night to pee. some of us sleep right through the signals.
if you can get a GP our gynocologistic to refer you ro a physical therspist to learn kegel and core exercises great. There are some meds that might reduce the incontinence but the side effects are a real concern.
Try accept your body, womens bodies go through many changes and like having a menstrual cycle it isnt "nice". Hating and fearing our body doesn't help.Best wishes for you to have less "wet dreams"!

I have wet many times after dreaming of running water or going to the bathroom. Most nights I wet without any dreaming which is more typical. I rarely wake up after wetting mainly because my diapers keep it contained.

The dreaded pee dream. I I only occasionally bedwet and most times there is no dream to go along with the bedwetting. However I have had pee dreams before and woke up in the morning wet.

My drams are usually where I have to pee bad in various settings and in the end I either end up finding relief by peeing on a bush, tree, side of the road or where ever... or my relief comes only after I have wet my pants in the dream. Unfortunately the later is the more likely outcome in the dream.

At other times I remember having a dream where I have wet my pants and I am going about whatever it is I am doing in my dream in my wet pants, either not seaming to know or care or I am very embarrassed and worried about others noticing. Those are the really weird dreams.

I have a theory that you start to wet the bed first and it somehow gets incorporated in a subsequent dream, as opposed to dreaming causing wetting.

You might be on to something. When I have the 'pee dream'. I never wake from it. I just have it and keep sleeping. So could be that the dreams I have are triggered after I have peed myself in bed. Also could be why later on I have dreams where I am obviously in peed in clothes and seem to go about my normal business, but aware that I have peed in my clothes.

I only have bed wetting episodes while I’m dreaming. As soon as I start using it in the dream I jolt up and rush to the restroom. I’m not in continent at all during the day, nor do I have urges to go multiple times throughout the day. I usually have to pee 1-3 times before I get home to get ready for bed and then I pee once right before bed. My bed wetting is intermittent, I can go days with being dry and bed wet once and go several more days being dry. This has been happening for 6 years now and I believe it has gotten more frequent in the last 2 years versus before where I could go months and practically forget I had the issue of bed wetting. Now I can count on at least one episode a week. Sometimes when it happens during the dream I bed wet, wake up pee after just bed wetting and literally go right back to sleep and dream again and pee again to wake up and use the bathroom again. I don’t usually bedwet twice like that but somehow it does happen and mostly within an hour or two after the last episode. Can anyone relate?

@Cin

Just posted on a similar question about bedwetting and dreaming and here was my reply.

"I have had dreams of peeing and wake up wet. Not sure how or if they are connected but I suspect there is some connection. It is not every time I bedwet (couple times a month or so) but I have had pee dreams. I tend to sleep through the night even after a bedwetting episode so I don't realize I've wetted until the morning when I wake up.

My dreams fall into two categories. Both usually have me having a very very urgent need to pee and either trying to hold it or trying to find a place to got pee. In one type I end up making a mad dash to a toilet when I can or a bush or tree or some please and get to pee. In the other kind I end up wetting myself in the dream.

not sure if this is helpful, but know that you are not alone."

Just an addition to my previous post.

I would like to disagree with the theory because I can feel it when I wet the bed, because in my dream I'm always urinating in the bathroom or somewhere outside where I'm aloane. Almost all the time I stop, wake up and go finish in the bathroom.

@Timmyd same here. As soon as pee starts getting everywhere while I’m on the toilet in the dream then I instantly wake sometimes while still peeing on myself because by that time it’s hard to stop the stream but I get to the real toilet and finish and afterwards I’m up for like 2-3 hours googling adult bed wetting ☹️

I feel like I have long, drawn-out dreams of looking for a bathroom. I find locked bathrooms or bathrooms without actual toilets... I think I wet the bed when I actually find a toilet in my dream

Not in my case. I did wonder which came first, the pee or my dream, but concluded the dream came first. This is why- I ONLY wet the bed when I'm dreaming that I'm peeing. However, I can dream that I'm peeing and not always wet the bed.
