Almost Normal

Just want to extend my best wishes and give you's a Ray of Hope.

I had my Prostate ( stage 4 ) removed June 2 2021 and it has taken
me to early Jan 2022 to be pad/guard liner free.

Still more frequent pees than I'd like, but managing about 3-3.5 hours sleep before I have to go, which is a blessing when compared to the 45 min to 90 minutes, 6-7 weeks ago.

Stay positive guys, your day will come, slower than you want but it takes time, you will all get there.

Be safe and Healthy.

Thanks Amacd for the ray of hope. I had RP
Oct 12. Going thru several pads daily, though I can manage it while sleeping. Several trips during the night, but dry pad in the morning. My issues are during the day, especially after sitting. Let’s loose during day when it wants to. Everyone says to give it time. Looking forward to that day.

Thanks for the hope! I’m looking forward to the day I’m pad free, but my wife will attest that I will never be Almost Normal haha. Congrats!!!!

Amacd: That's great to hear! I also had my stage 4 prostate removed in November and stopped wearing a liner last week with minimal leakage. I've been getting good advice from Michelle Kenway on YouTube for Kegel exercising and she has a new video posted yesterday on how to treat an overactive bladder and how to train yourself to have greater bladder capacity and less frequent trips to the bathroom. I'm feeling more confident now that I don't need the pads.
Other tips that may help:
1. Take long daily walks.
2. Reduce caffeine and alcohol.
3. Do Kegel exercises daily in the morning standing up when you are well rested and able to use the most strength.
4. Hold your pee for as long as you can during the day to stretch the bladder and train yourself to hold more. Michelle recommends, "the longer you can defer the more the bladder becomes accustomed to holding a greater volume. You can measure your volumes for a couple of days using an old jug to get an idea or average of where you are currently at with this. Try to increase the duration of your holds gradually say 5 -10 mins increase per week if you can manage this. We usually aim for average bladder volumes of around 300-400 mls or 10.14 oz - 13.52 oz. Try not to exceed 500 ml to avoid overstretching the bladder, rather aim for the sweet spot."

I’m also waiting for the day I don’t have to wear pads. I had my cancerous prostate removed 9/21/21. I have had 8 weeks of therapy to strengthen my pelvic floor and currently taking meds for leaking. I be now given up alcohol and caffeine. I walk and play golf but am always leaking which is nerve racking because I at times I feel like my clothes are wet and my partner’s see it. It has been so depressing dealing with this that I had an appointment with my family Dr. For something else and ended up balling like a baby to her because it was affecting my so much emotionally. She ended up putting me on Wellbutrin and has help slightly. By the way I am 68 and thank God every day that I’m cancer free but wish I was prepared for the emotional part

@Jlong53 I can definitely relate. The incontinence was a very emotional struggle for me.

I read your other thread. I took Myrbetriq with Solifenacin - Solifenacin helped me the most and started working in about 3 days. I went from leaking 30 ounces a day down to 20 ounces a day.

Thanks THudson1965. I have messaged my Dr. That I need to try something else. I’ll ask him about Solifenacin

jcdunn101 I have the same question I asked Amacd, that he's not answered. What is your age, because, unfortunately, age is a significant factor in return to continence? I believe it's as significant as pre-existing conditions.

Congratulations AMACD. I had my prostate removed in March 2020. I have tried everything but Unfortunately for me there hasn’t been any improvement. About 8 to 10 pads per day. My urologist recommended an AUS device but I am skeptical. They have a lot of issues with those. I don’t wanna end up worse off than I am. I do wish everyone the very best going forward.

@gnp10351
I am 56. 210 pounds Walk 1.5 miles 3 times a week - I walked about 2 miles 5 times a week for months 2 to 11 after prostatectomy.

I opted for the male urethral sling surgery. Both the male urethral sling surgery and the AUS (Artificial Urinary Sphincter) surgeries involved. I had the sling surgery test at 10 months and the surgery at 12 months after my prostatectomy (RALP - Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy ).

I can say that I am thankful at 4 months out from the sling surgery going from leaking 17 ounces a day (4 pads) down to a quarter ounce.

We all have to determine what is best for us.

jcdunn at 66, thudson at 58, and me - stryder at 74 and RP 3+ years ago. Got you all beat, but still leaking pad/day unless active as I'm 5-6/week with weights3/wk, walking/3/wk, vinyasa yoga 4/wk, and desert landscaping 1/wk. So 1-2 pads/day. When I actually relax have no leaking. Learning to accept situation without cancer. Sling or AUS is not sure enough for my liking. But still trying. But ED is still thing I'm working at with pump/ring & erection meds with encouraging wife of 43 years.

The following Facebook Group talks about Sex, Love, and Prostate Cancer to include Penile Rehabilitation with Pills (Cialis and Viagra), Pump (Bathmate, Vacurect, etc.), and the support from encouraging partners. Several members have has male urethral sling surgery, Artificial Sphincter, and penial implants.
